Korean carmaker Hyundai, during the 2024 CEO Investor Day, stated it is developing a new series-hybrid system for its upcoming line of cars. Called the Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), Hyundai's hybrid technology will combine the output of an internal combustion engine with that of an electric motor to provide a longer driving range.
In essence, the EREV setup makes use of a new powertrain and power electronics (PT/PE) system to enable four-wheel drive with the application of two motors. However, the operation is powered solely by electrical power with the engine being used only for battery charging, as seen in series hybrids. Hyundai claims EREV’s combined (ICE + EV) range stands at 900 kilometres when fully charged. In its initial days, it will be aimed at the North American and Chinese markets serving as a bridge to electrification. Production starts in 2026, followed by a launch in 2027.
By 2030, Hyundai wants to have a lineup of 21 EVs ranging from affordable to high-performance cars. Further, it is constantly pushing for battery technology advancement to develop NCM batteries and strengthen safety via improved battery management systems.
