The 2023 Delhi Auto Expo is underway, and Hyundai has made a grand presence at the event displaying a slew of models. Following the launch of the much-awaited IONIQ 5 EV, the company has showcased yet another EV model in the IONIQ 6.
The all-new electric sedan is the production guise of the Prophecy concept showcased at the last auto expo and the second product to be based on the scalable E-GMP skateboard platform for Hyundai. Expected to arrive in India before the end of 2024, the new model rivals the likes of the KIA EV6, BMW i4 and the Tesla Model 3 in the international market.
On the outside, the IONIQ 6 resembles the Prophecy concept offering a sleek aerodynamic design. Unlike the IONIQ 5 that was all square and retro, the new EV features
streamlined design with its long lines and creases producing an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.21. In addition, the car also replaces traditional door handles for flush fitting and uses a camera in place of ORVMs to achieve an even higher efficiency. The futuristic Parametric Pixel Lights continue to be present on the new model reinforcing the EV brand identity. The characteristic elements of the front end include a drooping bonnet, chunky blanked out bumper and swept back LED headlamps.
From the sides one can see the sloping coupe-like roofline along with flush door handles and 20-inch aero optimised wheels. Towards the rear, we once again see the Parametric Pixel lights along with a ducktail spoiler that houses a new high mounted stop lamp. Overall and especially from the rear the design of the IONIQ 6 is reminiscent of yesteryear Porsche cars.
Much like the exterior, the interior of the IONIQ 6 is an upgrade from the IONIQ 5. The cabin continues to house two large 12-inch screens, one for infotainment and the other for the driver’s cockpit. The eco-friendly cabin is designed to cocoon its occupants with mindful personal space and practical features for an elevated mobility experience. Other new features on the inside include buttonless slim doors, bridge type central console with storage space, sliding glove box, 64 colour dual ambient lighting and speed sync lighting on the front doors among others.
Like all new models the IONIQ 6 will feature a long list of features including wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 6-airbags, ADAS and more.
The use of a dedicated EV platform helps the IONIQ 6 achieve a flat floor at the rear, which helps in accommodating 5 with ease.
The 4.8-metre-long electric sedan comes powered by the same 77 kWh battery pack as the IONIQ 5. This unit comes available in either a RWD or AWD configuration producing up to 228 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The certified range of the four-wheeler is 614 kilometres for the RWD version and 583 kilometres on the AWD variant.
While Hyundai has not shared a concrete date for the launch of the IONIQ 6 in India. We expect the EV to go on sale before the end of 2024 with pricing starting from Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom).
