• First safety test for the Virtus • Mexican model features optional autonomous emergency braking • Yet to be tested by Global NCAP
Volkswagen's new sedan, the Virtus, has scored the maximum 5-star safety rating in the latest round of Latin NCAP safety test. The sedan that underwent testing is manufactured in India for the Mexican market. However, the Latin American model comes with more standard safety features compared to the domestic model.
Latin NCAP tested the base variant of the Virtus made for Mexico recently. The made-in-India sedan scored 92 percent in adult occupant safety tests with 36.94 points out of 40. The Virtus performed similarly in child occupant safety tests, scoring 45 out of 49 points.
In the safety assist systems tests, the Virtus scored 85 percent with 36.54 points out of 43. The one test where the mid-size sedan didn’t score well was at the pedestrian safety test, scoring 53 percent with 25.48 points out of 48.
The Mexican-spec Virtus is left-hand drive as opposed to right-hand drive in the Indian model. The Mexican model also comes with six airbags as standard compared to only two as standard in the Indian model. Furthermore, the Virtus also comes with Autonomous Emergency Braking as an option, which is not available on the domestic model.
In visual terms, the Mexican-Virtus gets different headlights than the Indian model. It also gets bigger 17-inch wheels compared to the 16-inch we get here.
The Indian-spec Virtus hasn’t been tested for safety yet but expect similar scores as the made-in-India Volkswagen Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq, which are based on the same MQB-A0-IN platform, have already scored a 5-star rating in Global NCAP tests, which has recently implemented new protocols to test cars.
