For the very first time in the history of 40 years in the automobile industry, the dominating Maruti Suzuki has been surpassed by the Tata Punch this year. The Punch is a sub-compact SUV from Tata Motors that became the country's largest-selling car in 2024.
Tata Motors sold more than 2.02 lakh units of the Punch model in 2024 directly leading to an overtake from Wagon R which sold 1.91 lakh units.
The Tata Punch was launched in 2021 and has ever since positioned itself as an affordable SUV with heavy promotion by Tata Motors. The pricing ranges between Rs 6.13 lakhs - and Rs 10 lakhs making it an affordable sub-compact SUV model among the customer base.
The SUV is offered in three engine choices Petrol, CNG, and an EV which makes it more options than its competitors. The car measures 3.8 meters and is an ideal choice for urban commuters looking for an SUV experience in a compact package.
It is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that delivers 86.5 bhp and 115Nm and is coupled with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT. As for CNG variants, it produces 72.5 bhp and 103Nm of torque with only comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Tata Punch fulfills the Indian consumer's preference for a strong SUV with its very competitive price point. As for its styling and design, the SUV is rugged with high ground clearance. It also offers modern features such as projector headlamps & LED DRLs, a touchscreen infotainment system, and a sunroof in higher variants, making it a value-for-money offering.
This success of Tata Motors with the Punch shows its ability to anticipate and adapt to changing market dynamics. By delivering a vehicle that combines both the appeal of an SUV and the practicality of a compact car, Tata has not only overtaken Maruti Suzuki but also placed the stage for a more overall change within the industry.
