Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch a new MPV that will slot in above the Ertiga and XL6 MPVs. It will be based on the Toyota Innova Hycross, which was recently unveiled globally, as part of the two brands’ partnership. Unlike the previous models like the Maruti Baleno / Toyota Glanza or Maruti Brezza / Toyota Urban Cruiser, the new MPV will have distinctively different styling to Toyota’s offering. It will be the first Toyota product to be crossed-badged as a Maruti. We take a closer look at Maruti’s planned upcoming offering.
As just stated above, Maruti’s upcoming MPV will look quite different to the New Toyota Innova Hycross. The former will get a redesigned front and rear end. It will feature a new front grille, headlights, LED DRLs, tail lights alongside new front and rear bumpers. Maruti will also provide new colours to the vehicle.
Like the exterior, the interior will be distinctive by way of colour theme and upholstery. Feature-wise, it will be similar to the Innova Hycross. What you will get is a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat, a nine-speaker audio system from JBL, multi-zone climate control, and more. Furthermore, the new model will become the first Maruti offering to get ADAS tech.
Maruti’s new MPV will be sharing its powertrain options with the Toyota Innova Hycross, which means it will be offered with a single 2-litre four-pot petrol engine, but in two variants. You choose it in either naturally-aspirated form or in a strong-hybrid variant, which will be heavily localized to keep the cost down. The latter will feature an EV-only mode, similar to the Grand Vitara. The ICE variant would make 174 bhp while the hybrid model is expected to churn out a maximum power output of 186 bhp. Peak torque for both powertrains will be the same at 197 Nm. Transmission choices would include a CVT or e-CVT gearbox.
The automaker is planning to launch its new premium MPV around the 2023 festive period. In comparison, the Toyota Innova Hycross will likely be launched at the Delhi Auto Expo 2023.
While prices have not been revealed yet, the new MPV is expected to be Maruti’s most expensive offering among its product lineup. Considering the New Grand Vitara is currently the most premium model with a price tag of Rs 19.65 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-end model, expect pricing between Rs 23 lakh to Rs 28 lakh (ex-showroom) for the new MPV.
