Mercedes EQG to come with four electric motors; To offer a claimed range of around 500 kilometres; First showcased as a concept at the Munich Motor Show 2021; Expected to launch in 2024.
For anyone looking for an exciting electric off-roader, Mercedes Benz has you covered with the EQG all-electric SUV. Showcased as a concept at the Munich Motor Show in 2021, this all-electric version of the iconic G-Class/G-wagon will carry forward the strong off-road capabilities and road presence of the vehicle in an environment-friendly way. Here is a quick run-down of what we know so far the car:
The EQG will be based on a modified version of the 2 nd Gen G-Class platform. This architecture will help the company cut down on lead time and bring production costs down while maintaining the capabilities of the SUV. Driving the electrified G-Class will be four individual electric motors (one for each wheel). These motors will also help replicate the off-road dynamics of the three differential locks kitted in the regular G-Class.
While the details about the battery pack capacity are scarce at the moment, the EQG is expected to be powered by a double-stacked battery pack with a total capacity of 100 kWh. This could give the EV around 500 kilometres of driving range on a single charge. The battery used in the electrified G-Class will most likely be based on the silicon anode chemistry which enables up to 40 percent higher energy density translating into a better range and power delivery. Independent suspension at the front along with a solid rear axle are expected to make its way into the production spec EQG.
Going by the images of the concept, the EQG will continue to feature the boxy design of the current generation G-Glass. The company is expected to introduce a new blanked-off front grille with an illuminated Mercedes logo, 22-inch aero-optimised wheels and other design bits to differentiate the two SUVs. The concept also featured a dual-tone paint scheme which can also be offered on the production-spec EV.
Expected to be revealed globally by the second half of 2023, the EQG will go on sale in 2024 as confirmed by the brand. According to media reports, the electrified G wagon will be offered in two trims internationally, the EQG 560 and EQG 580. Mercedes-AMG EQG, a more performance-oriented version is also expected to be introduced at launch.
