India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
MG Motor India is all set to introduce the all-new Windsor electric CUV in the country. It is basically the re-badged version of the Wuling Cloud EV, which is on sale in international markets including Indonesia. MG Windsor EV will be the brand's third electric vehicle in our market, joining the Comet and ZS EV. In fact, it is the first model after the new partnership between JSW and SAIC (MG's parent organisation).
MG Motor India has already teased the new Windsor EV on its social media platforms. The teasers reveal some interesting details including features and its performance through rugged terrains.
MG Motor India has officially announced that the Windsor EV will be arriving in our market on September 11, 2024. It is early to comment whether the new model will be revealed or MG will announce the prices on the same day. In fact, select MG dealers have already started accepting unofficial bookings of the Windsor EV. However, the company is yet to make an official announcement on the same.
The Windsor EV will be positioned between the Comet EV and the ZS EV in the Indian market. It is reported that MG would be aiming to achieve a higher level of localisation compared to the Comet EV and the ZS EV. As a reference, the ZS EV and Comet EV currently have localisation levels of 40% and 60%, respectively.
Adding to it, MG Motor India has revealed that it plans to launch its new electric vehicle under 20 lakhs. We expect the MG Windsor EV to cost somewhere between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. At this price point, it will challenge the likes of the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400 and the newly launched Tata Curvv EV.
The Windsor EV is expected to share its battery and electric motor specifications with the Wuling Cloud EV on sale in Indonesia. It will be offered with two battery packs and a front-axle-mounted electric motor. We expect the EV to offer a maximum range of up to 500km on a single charge (ARAI certified). In real conditions, the MG Windsor EV could offer a range of up to 400km on a single charge.
The Windsor EV will come with a front-axle mounted electric motor, which draws power from the 50.6kWh lithium ferro phosphate battery pack. It also gets a smaller 37.9kWh battery pack option. The combined power and torque output stands at 134hp and 200Nm, respectively.
The compact utility vehicle supports both AC home charging and DC fast charging. The battery can be charged from 20% to 100% in around 7 hours using the AC home charging. On the other hand, using DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 30% to 100% in just 30 minutes.
The Windsor EV is a 5-seater compact utility vehicle. The company is marketing the new model as the Crossover Utility Vehicle or CUV. It is basically a cross between a hatchback and a large MPV. It will measure similar to the Cloud EV, which is 4295mm in length, 1850mm in width and 1652mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm.
The Windsor EV is built on a born-electric or a skateboard platform, which is designed to offer maximum space inside the cabin. This platform is compatible with more advanced driver assistance and modern features. The electric CUV comes with a layered dashboard, which is dominated by a large 15.6-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit. There are minimal controls and switchgears on the dashboard, and most of the functions will be controlled using the infotainment unit.
The steering wheel seems identical to the Comet EV, but it has more buttons. There is an 8.8-inch digital instrument console, which also looks similar to the one offered in the Comet EV. The company has added soft-touch materials on the top of the dashboard, while the AC vents get brushed aluminium inserts. The electric CUV comes with a panoramic glass roof, which covers the entire roof offering an airy feel. It also gets India's first Aero-lounge seats with 35 degree recline function. The crossover UV gets all-black leatherette seats with headrests for all 3 occupants in the second-row.

While the global-spec model misses out on this feature, the Windsor EV for India will have a sunroof option. In fact, it will come with a full width panoramic glass roof, which appears similar to the one available on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric SUV. The panoramic sunroof covers the roof, which would give the MG Windsor's cabin an airy feel.
