Maruti Suzuki is expected to introduce the Next-Generation Swift in India around the first half of 2024. The upcoming hatchback will get an all-new exterior and interior design along with the latest features and creature comforts. Now, the latest media reports suggest that Maruti may offer the new Swift with a 1-litre turbo-petrol motor. We deep dive into what all are the key changes in the upcoming model.
The upcoming Swift turbo-petrol will use the same 1-litre Boosterjet engine that is offered in the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Fronx. It is a 3-cylinder motor that makes 100 bhp with 148 Nm of peak torque. The powertrain is paired with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. This will be the first time that the Swift is being offered with a turbo-petrol engine in India.
However, Maruti’s Boosterjet engine has been around for some time now. It was first introduced in the Baleno RS back in 2017 but was discontinued soon due to low sales. After making a comeback this year with the Fronx, Maruti is now planning to offer the locally-assembled turbo-petrol engine to more models in the future.

Testing for the Next-Gen Swift has already started in Japan and Europe. While the test mules have been clad in camouflage, spy shots give us a fair idea of what it will look like. The new Swift will retain its now familiar silhouette but will get a number of visual changes like a sharper front end, clamshell bonnet, and more angular rear end. The hatchback is expected to offer LED headlights and taillights.
Alongside the 1-litre turbo-petrol option, Maruti is also likely to introduce a strong-hybrid powertrain choice with the hatchback. The engine is an all-new 3-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol unit that will be mated to Toyota’s strong hybrid tech which we have already seen on the Grand Vitara. The power plant is being heavily localized in order to keep costs down. The new hybrid motor is expected to make the upcoming Swift the most economical car in India, with a claimed mileage of over 35 kmpl.
Upon launch in 2024, the Next-Gen Maruti Suzuki Swift will rival the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Tata Tiago, and the Citroen C3 in its segment.
