The German premium carmaker, Volkswagen had stopped producing Polo hatchback in India in 2022. However, the VW Polo nameplate still holds a significance in the Indian auto industry. Out of the 700,000 Volkswagen cars sold till date, Polo accounts for almost 60 percent of total sales that's 400,000 units.
In fact, the Volkswagen Polo still has a huge demand in used car market and its resale value has gone up by 30 percent in past 3 years. Globally, the Polo hatchback is celebrating 50th year and the occasion will also be celebrated in India. As a "token of gratitude" to Polo customers, Volkswagen has announced a special loyalty offer for the March month. Customers ready to exchange their Polo and opt for Taigun or Virtus will get a Rs 50,000 loyalty bonus.
Volkswagen is selling the Polo hatchback in new avatar in select international markets; however, the same won't be introduced in our market. The global Polo sits above 4 meters in length and is based on the MQB A0 platform that underpins the Taigun and Virtus. In fact, VW has no plans of bringing the Polo hatchback back to India.
Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India said that the company is constantly in touch with customers to know what they want, and the same is being constantly discussed within the organization.
Volkswagen may not launch the Polo in hatchback avatar, but an SUV can be a right option for India. He further said that "If I have to get the Polo into India, I would rather go through the performance route and get the Polo GTI. However, I am looking at all possibilities."
The German brand has recently revealed the new Tera sub-compact SUV in Brazil. VW India is also reportedly developing a sub-4 meter SUV based on the Skoda Kylaq, which is developed on the MQB A0 In platform. VW may launch the new compact SUV as a new-gen Polo; however, nothing has been revealed officially.
Volkswagen has recently announced to launch the performance-oriented Golf GTI and Tiguan R-Line in India in the second quarter of this fiscal.
