Toyota is planning to drive in more premium models in India as bigger-sized vehicles or SUVs are in high demand. The upcoming Toyota SUVs, which will cater to diverse customer requirements, will be offered with multiple powertrains, including BEV (battery electric vehicles) and hybrids. In the next couple of years, the Japanese OEM will bring in at least five new SUVs, and here’s a brief on each of them.
Toyota Hyryder, the strong hybrid midsize SUV from the Japanese automaker, will receive a new three-row version next year. This SUV will essentially be the rebadged or reengineered version of the 7-seater Maruti Grand Vitara, which is also due in 2025. Compared to the 5-seater Hyryder, the new Toyota 7-seater SUV will have a longer wheelbase, allowing it to accommodate an extra row of seats. Most of its design elements, interior layout, and features will be borrowed from its 5-seater sibling. In fact, the powertrain might also be carried forward from the Hyryder. However, it’s expected to feature a more angular grille, larger alloys, tweaked bumper, and updated taillamps. The latter comes with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5L strong hybrid powertrain options.
Next in line is the new-generation Toyota Fortuner with a mild hybrid system with a 2.8L, 4-cylinder GD series diesel engine and a 48V mild hybrid tech. This setup is likely to deliver power of around 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. The Fortuner’s petrol version will continue to come with the 2.7L naturally aspirated engine. The model lineup will have both RWD and 4X4 drivetrain options. The 2025 Toyota Fortuner will underpin the TNGA-F platform that’s compatible with different body styles and powertrains. Reports suggest that the new Fortuner will feature Toyota Safety Suite (ADAS) along with the vehicle stability control system and hydraulic steering.
Toyota’s first electric offering will be a rebadged version of the Maruti e-Vitara that’s due in March 2025. The forthcoming Toyota EV will have slightly different styling and name than its donor model. It’s expected to hit showrooms in 2026. Similar to the e-Vitara, this new EV from Toyota will be built on the all-new Heartect-e platform and come with two battery options – 49kWh and 61kWh. Both batteries, with a single electric motor, deliver 144bhp and 174bhp, respectively. The torque output is the same for both setups – 174Nm. The larger battery can also be had with the dual motor setup and e-AllGrip AWD system, offering an estimated range of around 500km.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will arrive in India towards the end of 2025. In the company’s product lineup, this SUV will sit below the Land Cruiser 300 and come via the CBU route. Based on the TNGA-F architecture, the SUV will derive power from the 2.8L turbo diesel engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. An upgraded Multi-Terrain Monitor interface will enhance its off-road capabilities. Dimensionally, the Land Cruiser Prado measures 4,920mm in length and 1,870mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,850mm. Inside, the physical control buttons with multiple switchgear will be similar to the Land Cruiser 300. It will have a new-generation touchscreen infotainment system with a wraparound digital display, premium leather upholstery, multi-zone climate control, and several more goodies.
Toyota is also working on a new rugged SUV that will be positioned below the Fortuner. Called the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the SUV will be designed on a modified IMV platform and measure under 4,500mm in length. Its width and height are expected to be similar to the Fortuner, measuring around 1,830mm and 1,850mm, respectively. The SUV will sit on a 2,750mm long wheelbase. Powering the new Toyota FJ Cruiser will be a 2.8L turbo diesel engine boosted with mild hybrid technology. The SUV will also be made available with a petrol engine option as well. The FJ Cruiser SUV’s India launch is likely to happen in 2025, with a debut in the coming months.
