In the midst of a rise in passenger vehicle sales, India’s top four automobile companies have released their sales figures for May 2024. Maruti Suzuki was the top seller with around 144,000 passenger vehicles (PVs) sold excluding exports, followed by Hyundai at over 49,000.

India’s largest automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki reported a 4.3% month-on-month passenger vehicle sales growth in May at 144,002, while exports stood at 17,367. Whereas, the utility vehicle segment combined including Ertiga, Brezza, Jimny and XL6 surged to 54,204, up from 46,243 cars dispatched in May 2023. Cars including the Alto K10 and S-Presso at 9,902 units marked a 95% fall in sales than the year-ago period.
In May, Hyundai saw an increase in total PV sales to 63,551 vehicles, including 14,400 exports (30.91% YoY). Domestic sales along with exports witnessed a 6.63% increase on a year-on-year basis. Accounting for over 67% of domestic purchases, the Exter, Venue and Creta SUVs were the most in-demand out of the 14 automobiles the brand sells in the country. Currently, Hyundai has 1,464 showrooms spread across 832 cities.
Next up, Tata Motors revealed a 1.76% YoY improvement to 46,697 cars, while exports went up by 257%. Domestic and international sales of the homegrown brand together noted a 2% upliftment (47,075 cars). The Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) segment, however, fell to 7,924 from 8,160 units as compared to the year-ago period besides commercial vehicle exports down 14%. Additionally, the Small Commercial Vehicle and pickup category also fell by 6% to 11,337 units.
Sports Utility Vehicle manufacturer Mahindra recorded domestic and overseas shipments of 43,218 and 1,065 cars, respectively. Overall, the sale of 71,682 vehicles contributed to a growth of 17 per cent, including commercial freight carriers. Notably, Mahindra’s newly launched XUV 3XO boosted sales with over 2,500 SUVs delivered in May.
Another Korean on the list, Kia sold 19,500 cars as against 18,766 units in May 2023, translating to a growth of 3.9 per cent. So far in 2024, we have been aggressive in introducing new competitive variants of our models, which has contributed significantly to our sales. The Seltos sub-compact SUV alone with 6,736 buyers accounted for 65.71% growth year-over-year. EV6 SUV traded for 15 times, 68 cars less than in April this year.
Last on the list, Honda’s May exports equalling 6,251 cars surpassed the domestic sales figure of by 22 per cent. Exports alone had a 964.91% YoY growth trajectory from 587 cars in the year-ago period. The total number of Honda cars bought in the month amounted to 11,073.
