Hyundai Motor India Limited, India’s second largest automaker has announced that it has voluntarily sent three of its models to be crash-tested by Bharat NCAP. Now, reports suggest that Tucson will be the brand’s first model to be tested by the new safety assessment programme followed by the recently launched Exter Micro-SUV. The results of the tests are expected to be released by early 2024.
Euro NCAP and Latin NCAP have already tested the current-gen Tucson in 2021 and 2022, scoring 5 stars in the former and 3 in the latter, respectively. Latin NCAP has a slightly different scoring system and testing process and is known to be harder, hence the difference in scores.
However, both NCAPs rated Tucson’s body shell and footwell to be stable, while the SUV scored highly in the new side pole impact test, and also complied with pedestrian protection rules. The SUV did not score as highly in Latin NCAP because it did not meet the minimum fitment requirements.
In India, the Tucson comes with six airbags, ABS, EBD, and seat belt reminders as standard. It also gets ADAS features like autonomous emergency braking and lane assist. Hyundai cars is aiming for a full 5-star safety rating for the SUV. One thing to note is that Bharat NCAP doesn’t really factor in ADAS-features into its overall safety rating.
Following the crash test of the Hyundai Tucson, it is expected that the Exter will be the next model to be tested. The micro-SUV is expected to do well at the Bharat NCAP as it gets all the safety features of the Tucson except for ESC as standard.
The new Bharat NCAP programme was scheduled to start from October 1. However, it looks to be delayed as there hasn’t been any test results released yet. This is mainly because automakers are yet to send units for the tests. According to the latest reports, testing will likely commence in mid-December, with the first results to be announced around early 2024.
