Ferrari recently unveiled the new Roma Spider, the latest entry-level convertible model in the brand’s current product lineup. The Roma Spider replaces the Portofino M and also becomes the first soft top Ferrari since the F430 Spider dating back to 2010.
The Roma Spider features a completely redesigned rear end to fit in the roof-retraction mechanism, wind deflectors and integrated rear seat headrests. The drop-top features the same carbon-fiber tub as the Roma coupe but gets extra rigidity to compensate for the lack of a roof. All the changes make the Roma Spider 84 kgs heavier than the Coupe’s 1,570 kg kerb weight.
As mentioned above, the Roma Spider is the first soft-top convertible from Ferrari in over a decade. In fact, it is the first front-engined soft top Ferrari since the 365 GTS4 belonging to the year 1969. The roof itself is made from a five-layer fabric which provides similar sound insulation levels as the coupe’s hardtop. You can open or close the roof in just 13.5 seconds at speeds of up to 59 kmph. The Roma Spider also gets a new, patented wind deflector that is integrated into the rear bench. You can raise the deflector at speeds of up to 170 kmph.
Powering the Roma Spider is the same 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that is also found in the coupe. The motor delivers a maximum power output of 612 bhp with 760 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed DCT automatic gearbox.
While the Roma Spider is heavier than the Coupe, the former’s active spoiler and curved roofline help it to achieve the same 0-100 kmph time of just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 320 kmph as the latter.
While Ferrari has not officially confirmed if the Roma Spider is coming to India, it will likely be more expensive than the Coupe when it arrives. Currently, the Roma Coupe is priced at Rs 3.76 crore, (ex-showroom).
