Korean car manufacturer Hyundai is planning to launch Genesis, its luxury car brand in India by the end of this year. Initially, two SUV models will be imported via the completely built-up (CBU) route and assembly will begin later in India, a media report stated. Rivals of Genesis include Audi, BMW and Mercedes.
In the United States, Genesis sells a range of vehicle types, including sedans, SUVs and electric cars. For the Indian market, three SUVs namely the GV70, GV80 and GV90 are being considered for launch. The decision to enter the luxury car space has been taken and the company is now moving to the execution space, said sources. If reports are to be believed, Genesis would utilise its parent company’s Chennai plant for local assembly.
First up, the GV70 mid-size SUV has a coupe-like design and features 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre turbo petrol engines and a 2.2-litre diesel mill. Length, breadth and height dimensions of the SUV are 4,715 mm, 1,910 mm and 1,630 mm. An 8-inch touchscreen display, all-wheel drive (AWD) system, 60:40 split folding seats at the rear and 8 airbags are part of the equipment list of the SUV. It rivals the likes of Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
Sitting right above the GV70, the GV80 is longer than the former by 225 millimetres and has the Volvo XC90 and Porsche Cayenne as its rivals in the SUV segment. The mid-size crossover shares its underpinnings with the G80 sedan and a third row of seats is an optional add-on with the five-door SUV. Genesis GV80 starts at $59,000 (over Rs. 49 lakh) in the US and it would be interesting to see how the brand prices the car for the Indian market.
Slated for a global launch in 2026, the GV90 is the biggest in the SUV lineup being planned for India. It is estimated that it would be offered in an electric avatar, the concept of which was showcased at the New York Auto Show this year. The three-row SUV will be equipped with AWD and will share the battery used in the Kia EV9. At 5,275 mm, the GV90 will be longer than the Mercedes GLS.
