Kia Motors has at last revealed the production version of EV9 Concept. The flagship electric SUV is the brand’s biggest model globally and the second pure electric product after the EV6. The EV9 is part of Kia’s ‘Plan S’ strategy, which aims to launch another 13 new pure electric vehicles in a span of next 4 years.
The EV9 is the first All-New Kia to be fully designed by ex-BMW stylist Karim Habib, who stated that all upcoming models will be visually linked as well. In flesh, the production version of the EV9 retains most of the design elements from the striking concept showcased in 2021. The result being that the front end features the brand’s new ‘Tiger Nose’ grille with integrated LED light patterns, ‘star map’ LED headlights, and a flat, clamshell-ish bonnet. Move to the side and you will notice the distinct two-box shape, large greenhouse, sharply kinked rear window line, and new 21-inch alloy wheels. While the rear offers eye-catching trapezoidal creases, vertical ‘star map’ LED tail lights positioned on the edges, a boot lid spoiler, and an aluminum skid plate. Compared to the concept, the production version of the EV9 sits a bit closer to the ground, with softer edges and thick black body cladding all around.
The EV9 provides an all-new dashboard design. The key highlight of the cabin is the three screen setup, one for the infotainment system, the other for instrument cluster and lastly the digital rear-view mirror display. The electric SUV also features a swiveling middle-row on the 6 seater model, allowing the rear passengers to face each other while on the move. Other equipment onboard would include digital climate control for the second and third row of seats. The availability of tray tables located at the back of the front seats would be a very useful feature for its occupants. The EV also gets ‘Automode’ which allows the maximum level of assisted driving on any Kia car till date.
During the unveiling, Kia did not reveal any details regarding the engine specification of the vehicle. Given the EV9 is based on the E-GMP platform as the EV6, it is expected to support 350 kW fast charging while the bigger wheelbase means battery pack size should be around 100 kWh. The electric SUV would have a targeted range of 543 kms and support vehicle-to-load charging as standard. Also like the EV6 , the automaker will offer both single and dual-motor variants for the EV9.
