Mahindra & Mahindra’s latest offering, the Scorpio N, has scored the maximum 5-stars under the new safety test protocols in the latest round of Global NCAP, becoming the third Mahindra SUV to do so. It is also the safest body-on-frame SUV on sale in India currently. While it was yet another day for Mahindra, Maruti had to walk the shame as three of its models failed miserable at the crash test.
The Scorpio N scored 29.25 points out of a total of 34 in adult occupant protection tests, resulting in a 5-star rating.
Testers noted that the Scorpio N offered good protection to the driver and passenger head and neck, while protection for the driver’s and passenger’s chest was rated only marginal.
As part of the new testing protocol, the Scorpio N was subjected to a side impact test with a deformable barrier. The SUV sailed through the test scoring 16 out of 17 points. The testers noted that while the overall protection to occupants was rated OK, the chest area needed more safety.
In the child occupant protection test, the SUV earned 3-stars, scoring 28.93 out of 49 points. This includes 4.93 points out of 12 for the CRS (child restraint system) installation and the maximum dynamic score of 24. The testers also noted that the SUV has ISOFIX mounting points in the outer rear seats in the second row.
Prices of the new Mahindra Scorpio N start from Rs 11.99 lakh for the base Z2 model, going up to Rs 21.65 lakh for the top-end Z8L variant. It is offered with both petrol and diesel powertrain options. The former churns out 203 bhp and 380 Nm of peak torque while the latter makes 175 bhp and 400Nm. Gearbox options include 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.
According to the new Global NCAP protocols, a new vehicle is given full 5-star rating only if it scores the required marks in the safety analysis checklist, pedestrian safety, pole side impact, and seat belt reminder tests.
Alongside the Mahindra Scoprio N, 3 other Maruti Suzuki models were put to test. These included the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, S-Presso and the Swift. The rigorous new testing standerd ripped through the cars, resulting in all the three hatchbacks scoring only 1 Star adult safety rating. Furthermore, the Ignis and the S-Presso scored zero stars in child occupant safety, with the Swift not faring much better by scoring a single star out of 5. Global NCAP rated that the body shells of the Maruti cars as unstable, and not capable of withstanding any further loadings.
