Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown UV maker, is all set to introduce the long-awaited 5-door version of the Thar lifestyle SUV by mid-2024. Rumoured to be called the Mahindra Thar Armada, the new SUV will ride on a longer wheelbase and will be loaded with many new features that are not offered in the 3-door sibling.
The 5-door Thar has been spotted numerous times during its test rounds on the Indian roads. The spy images reveal some interesting details about the top changes and what more features are on offer. The current Mahindra Thar sits under 4 meters in length; however, the new Thar Armada is expected to be around 300mm longer. Moreover, the wheelbase is expected to be increased by up to 150mm to create bigger boot and rear passenger doors.
The Mahindra Thar Armada 5-door will have a fixed metallic roof, which allows the automaker to add sunroof. What's interesting is that the SUV could be offered with both single-pane and dual-pane sunroof options. In terms of features, the SUV will have push button start, LED lighting system, front & rear parking sensors, front & rear center armrest, rear AC vents, a larger digital instrument console and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Other additions will include rear defogger and wiper, bigger 19-inch wheels, speakers on roof, rear bench seat with 60:40 split folding, 6 airbags, doors mounted window up-down buttons and Auto dimming IRVM.
Similar to the 3-door Thar, the 5-door Mahindra Thar Armada will also receive an entry-level 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine. This engine produces 117bhp and 300Nm of torque. It is likely to be offered in 2WD layout, which will position the Mahindra Thar Armada 1.5 against midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
The SUV will be based on the Scorpio N's architecture. Not just the platform, the new Thar Armada could also source the more powerful engines with the Scorpio. The other engine options could include a 175PS, 2.2L diesel and 203PS, 2.0L turbo petrol. The higher-spec variants will continue to be offered with 4WD layout. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
It is early to comment whether the new Thar 5-door could receive Frequency Selective Damping as offered in the Scorpio-N. The SUV could also get a 360-degree camera; however, nothing on the same is yet to be revealed. Few spy images reveal that the Thar Armada will get rear disc brakes and Watt's-link type suspension. The SUV might also receive FSD suspension setup, which we have seen on the Scorpio-N.
Tata Motors is currently testing 3 products including Harrier EV, Altroz facelift and the Sierra lifestyle SUV, which will be launched in the country in 2025.
