It is no secret that the two homegrown automakers, Mahindra and Tata Motors are fighting to grab the second position in the list of top car manufacturers in India. The latest data reflects that Mahindra maintains its strong hold in the market, while Tata Motors is witnessing a constant decline its sales amid rising competition.

In the utility vehicles segment, Mahindra sold a total of 47,306 vehicles in the domestic market. The company has reported a massive YoY sales growth of 18 per cent. In the same month last year, Mahindra dispatched 40022 utility vehicles in the market. 


The company has also exported over 1,000 SUVs las month. Mahindra reported a total sales (Domestic + Export) of 48,329 units. 


In the first three months of FY26, Mahindra sold a total of 1,52,067 utility vehicles as against 1,24,248 units in the same period last financial year, reporting an impressive YoY sales growth of 22%. 


In the EV category, Mahindra sold a total of 2,979 electric SUVs in June 2025. The company holds a market share of 22.9 per cent in the passenger EV segment in June 2025. Mahindra is currently selling 3 electric vehicles - the BE 6, XEV 9e and XUV400.

Tata Motors sold a total of 37,237 vehicles in June 2025 as against 43,624 vehicles in the same month last year. The company recorded a year-on-year sales decline of 15 percent. 


In the Q1 FY26 (April-June 2025), Tata Motors sold a total of 124,809 passenger cars in India. The company reported a YoY sales decline of 10%, as it sold 1,38,104 vehicles in the same period last financial year. 


The only good news for Tata Motors is the rising demand for its electric vehicles. The company sold 5,228 electric vehicles in June 2025 as against 4,657 units in the same period last year, reporting a YoY sales growth of 12 percent. However, the brand’s EV sales in last quarter declined by 2 percent. In the first quarter of FY26, Tata sold a total of 16,231 EVs as against 16,579 units in the same period last financial year.
