First launched in 2011, the Mahindra XUV500 played a significant role in shaping the brand’s presence in the Indian market. It was Mahindra’s flagship SUV, initially well-received due to its styling, premium features, and performance. In its early years, the SUV recorded strong sales, even achieving 1,000 units a month. However, competition grew fiercer over time with the arrival of new contenders, including the Tata Harrier and Hyundai Tucson.
The XUV500 received its first major midlife update in 2015, featuring slightly improved styling, new features, and minor upgrades to the engine options. The SUV never saw a full generational shift. Mahindra introduced the XUV700 in 2021 as its new flagship SUV. Gradually, buyers shifted towards the XUV700 due to its new-age technology, better features, and modern design. As a result, the sales of the XUV500 declined drastically, and it was discontinued in the same year (2021).
There have been rumors that Mahindra might bring back the iconic XUV500, positioning it as a midsize SUV to challenge the Hyundai Creta. However, the carmaker hasn’t confirmed any plans to revive the SUV yet.
We believe there are five solid reasons to bring back the XUV500 to India:
1.The XUV500 had a cult following in India. It was the first major premium product from Mahindra that helped the brand establish itself as a serious contender in the market. Its revival would enable Mahindra to tap into this legacy and cater to a loyal customer base.
2.The midsize SUV segment has been witnessing tremendous growth, with models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara gaining popularity. OEMs like Renault are also returning to the segment with the third-generation Duster in 2025. The new-gen XUV500 could pave a new path for Mahindra in this highly competitive segment, leveraging its brand reputation for rugged, value-for-money SUVs.
3.The new XUV500 could also be a strong contender in the midsize SUV segment with an electric powertrain, as the market shifts towards hybrid and electric vehicles.
4.With the new update, Mahindra might equip the XUV500 with high-tech features, including a Level 2 ADAS suite and autonomous capabilities. This would make it competitive against segment leaders like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
5.The Mahindra XUV500 was renowned for its great value for money. It offered premium features at a competitive price point. If this remains the case with the new version, it would provide a budget-friendly alternative to more expensive SUVs in the market.
