Maruti Suzuki recently announced its plan to launch four new BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) by the fiscal year 2030. However, the carmaker has yet to confirm name and launch timelines of its upcoming electric vehicles (EVs). What’s confirmed is that the range will start with the arrival of the Maruti e Vitara in March 2025. It could be followed by the Fronx electric, an entry-level small car and the Ertiga electric.
The Maruti Fronx electric will be positioned against the Tata Punch EV, while the electric iteration of the Ertiga MPV will target the fleet operators and family car buyers.
The Indo-Japanese automaker has confirmed that the Maruti e Vitara will come with two battery packs – a 49kWh and a 61kWh. The smaller battery offers a claimed power of 143 bhp, while the bigger battery pack is good for 173 bhp. Both batteries deliver a maximum torque of 192.5 Nm. Maruti Suzuki has revealed that the electric Vitara will deliver a range of over 500km (MIDC).
Details of the Maruti Fronx electric are not available at this point. However, this small electric SUV is expected to feature a few EV-specific design details inside and out. It would be quite early to comment on its battery pack, range and power figures. We expect it to feature a small capacity battery. Its arch rival – Tata Punch EV is currently available with the 25kWh and 35kWh battery options, delivering a claimed MIDC range of 315km and 421km, respectively.
Prices of the Maruti Fronx Electric are expected to start around Rs 12 lakh for the base variant. The Tata Punch EV with the 35kWh battery pack is available within the price range of Rs 12.84 lakh – Rs 14.44 lakh (ex-showroom). This compact electric crossover is likely to arrive in 2027.
The carmaker is also working on the strong hybrid version of the Maruti Fronx, which is expected to arrive by mid-2025. The Fronx hybrid will come with the Swift’s 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. It will be Maruti Suzuki’s own strong hybrid powertrain that’s reported to be highly cost effective than Toyota’s Atkinson strong hybrid technology. The Fronx hybrid is expected to deliver a mileage of over 35kmpl.
