Maruti Suzuki plans to mount a challenge to the popular 3-row MPVs like the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700 and the Hyundai Alcazar with its upcoming offering, codenamed the Y17 SUV. Set for a 2025 launch, the new SUV will build on the success of the Grand Vitara in the Indian market.
Developed on the same Global C-Platform as the Grand Vitara, the new model will have a longer wheelbase to accommodate the extra row of seats. Following in the footsteps of rivals like Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki can slightly tweak the design of the new model to differentiate it from the existing SUV.
On the inside, we expect the company to continue with the same dashboard layout and features list. In its current form, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is also fairly equipped. Powertrain duties on the new model are expected to be carried by the familiar 1.5-litre K-Series petrol and 1.5-litre TNGA hybrid engines.
The new model is expected to be launched after the introduction of Maruti’s Innova Hycross derivative, which will be the company’s first premium 3-row SUV/MPV.
Maruti Suzuki is working on a new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Built with an investment of Rs 7,000 crore, the new plant will have an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh vehicles which will further help the company extend its overall production capacity to over 2 million units by 2028.
