MG Motor India has just announced that its upcoming smart EV will be called the ‘Comet’. The name is inspired by the 1934 British aircraft which participated in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race. This continues the British automaker’s theme of naming their vehicles after iconic aircrafts.
The automaker said that the ‘Comet’ arrives at a time when driving in cities has become a stressful experience, needing agile and futuristic solutions.
Boxy in design, the Comet / MG Air EV’s front end is expected to feature vertically set projector headlights, a wide air intake, and an LED light bar which spans the width of the vehicle. The side profile of the four-wheeler is quite simple with straight character lines while the rear end provides LED tail lights and a LED light bar sitting just below the windscreen.
Moving inside, the electric vehicle's interior will offer a minimalist theme with dual-tone upholstery. In terms of features, it is likely to get dual 10.25-inch displays for the touchscreen infotainment system and instrument cluster, connected car tech, climate control, wireless charging, ambient lighting, and more.
In international markets, the Air EV comes with two battery pack options, a 17.3 kWh unit and a 28.4 kWh unit. Both power a single front-axle mounted electric motor that delivers a power output of 40 bhp with 110 Nm of peak torque. The former has a claimed range of 200 kms while the latter provides 300 km range.
However, MG is yet to announce which battery pack option will be offered with the Comet in India.
MG is likely to launch the Comet in the country around the first half of 2023. Expect the EV to be priced around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
Upon launch, the Comet will rival the likes of the Tata Tiago .EV and Citroen eC3.
