India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
MG Motor India is all set to introduce an all-new compact utility vehicle in electric avatar in the country. Called the MG Windsor EV, the new crossover-MPV is based on the Wuling Cloud EV in Indonesia. It will be the brand's third electric CUV in the country. Moreover, the electric CUV will be the first model under SAIC (MG's parent company) and JSW Group in India.
While MG Motor India is yet to reveal the exact launch timeline, our sources suggest that the MG Windsor CUV will be introduced in the first week of September 2024. MG Motor India has already started promoting the electric CUV on its social media platforms.
We expect the electric model could make its public debut at the end of August 2024. MG Motor India will be aiming to capitalize on the growing demand for cars during the festive season, before Diwali.
MG Motor India has already confirmed that it will launch two new mass market EVs, which will be priced between Rs 10 - 20 lakh. The new MG Windsor CUV is expected to be priced under Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, the Windsor will rival the likes of the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400 and others.
The MG Windsor EV is most likely to share the battery pack and electric motor with the Wuling Cloud EV. It is packed with a front-axle mounted electric motor, which draws power from the 50.6kWh lithium ferro phosphate battery pack. The combined power and torque output stands at 134hp and 200Nm, respectively.
Range - Similar to the Cloud EV, MG Windsor EV is expected to offer an electric range of up to 460km on a single charge. The compact utility vehicle supports both AC home charging and DC fast charging. The battery can be charged from 20% to 100% in around 7 hours using the AC Home Charging. On the flip side, using DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 30% to 100% in just 30 minutes.
The Windsor EV is based on a born-electric platform, which is specifically designed to offer maximum space inside the cabin. Adding to it, the architecture allows MG Motor India to add more advanced driver assistance and modern features in the electric crossover.
It comes with a layered dashboard, which is dominated by a large 15.6-inch floating touchscreen infotainment. There are minimal controls or switchgears on the dashboard, and most of the things will be controlled using the infotainment unit. The international-spec model comes with several modern features including a "Sofa Mode" in the front seats, where front seats can fully recline into "sofa mode."
The teaser confirms that the new electric CUV will receive a panoramic sunroof. Adding to it, the India-spec model could also get an ADAS suite with a 360-degree surround view camera. The ADAS tech features include adaptive cruise control, bend cruise assistance, automatic emergency brake, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, safe distance warning and high-beam assist.
The international-spec model is available with 4 airbags, ABS with EBD & brake assist, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electric Parking Brake with Auto Hold function, Hill Hold Control, Tire Pressure Monitoring System and Rear Parking Sensor.
In terms of proportions, the MG Windsor electric CUV is 4295mm in length, 1850mm in width and 1652mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2700mm. The dimensions are quite similar to the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and others. It is basically a cross between a hatchback and a large MPV.
In terms of styling, the CUV has a cab forward styling that is very common in MPVs. The new Windsor MPV will come with a blanked-off front design with a small lower air-intake that also houses the RADAR setup for ADAS. It has a split headlamp setup with LED DRLs on top, which are connected by a LED strip. The main headlamp unit is placed on the lower bumper.
The MPV gets A-pillar mounted outside rear view mirrors, a flat side profile with limited lines, flush-fitting door handles and a floating-type A-pillar. It comes with EV-specific alloy wheels, integrated spoiler, and a bumper-mounted licence plate holder. The charging port is placed on the left front fender.
