India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Maruti Suzuki ex-CTO and executive committee member CV Raman, during an automotive conference, said that the newly launched Swift has lost 100 kg of weight as compared to its first-generation.
With the new HEARTECT platform underpinnings, the fourth-generation model is the lightest yet. As a result, fuel efficiency has gone up and emissions have been reduced by 50% (1st gen: 12.36 kmpl) and 47% (1st gen: 147g CO2 per km), respectively. Suzuki was able to achieve this by making use of lots of alternate materials in manufacturing, he added.
Notably, the 2024 Swift misses out on the hybrid technology it gets overseas, but the car manufacturer still claims a maximum mileage of 25.75 kmpl, an over 3% increment from the previous model.
“We have improved the usage of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) in structural parts as they have significantly higher minimum tensile strengths. While we have enhanced the share of UHSS and AHSS from 6% to 17% and 2% to 4%, respectively, in the current [Swift], the share of HSS has been reduced to 23% from 42 percent,” Raman stated.
Major automakers in the country are shifting to steel alternatives including aluminium and thermoplastic materials, leading to increased efficiency and superior crash performance.
