Mercedes-Benz will be unveiling the All-New E-Class range on the 25th of April 2023. Like the rest of the new Mercedes model lineup, the new E-Class will have a more premium design and share styling elements with its EQE pure electric counterpart. We take a closer look.
The upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class will offer a design that is inspired by its flagship model the S-Class. The premium sedan’s front end will feature a large chrome grille and angular lines, flanked by slimmer LED headlights and DRLs. The side profile will provide flared wheel arches and a strong shoulder line while the rear end will be sleeker, taking design cues from both the S-Class and C-Class.
Mercedes is expected to also introduce the All-New E-Class Estate and All Terrain model alongside the regular sedan in the global markets. The brand is likely to bring in the New E53 variant as well, which will feature unique design elements like a bespoke AMG grille, larger brakes, and a sports exhaust. The New-Generation E-Class however will not get a coupe or a cabriolet variant. Both will be replaced by the New Mercedes-Benz CLE which will sit between the C-Class and E-Class. It will come as a coupe or convertible only.
The German automaker has already revealed the interior of the Next-Gen E-Class. It will offer a new MBUX Superscreen as an optional extra which is effectively two screens under a single glass panel. The Superscreen adds a separate display for the passenger alongside the infotainment system, allowing them to use certain features like watching movies on the go. A sensor also monitors the driver’s attention, disabling the passenger screen if the driver is distracted by it.
Another new optional equipment will be the driver-facing camera that can be used when stationary by various third party apps like Zoom and TikTok that you can download to the MBUX operating system.
The all-new MBUX operation system has also incorporated Artificial Intelligence which can learn the driver’s routine and preempts their needs. The system can automatically do things like heat up the driver’s seat when it gets colder or wind down the window when the car reaches the entrance of a frequented car park. It will also provide a full digital instrument cluster and an optional HUD (Heads Up Display) which has a wider FOV (Field of View) than the previous one.
Yet to be revealed, the New E-Class will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine choices as it is expected to get hybrid tech across the range. The current model’s M254 four-cylinder petrol and OM654 four-cylinder diesel will now offer mild-hybrid technology.
On the other hand, M256 six-cylinder turbo-petrol and the OM656 six-cylinder turbodiesel options will be offered with plug-in hybrid functionality. Both engines will be paired to a 28.6 kWh battery pack, offering an electric-only range of over 100 kms.
Transmission available with the vehicle will include a single 9-speed automatic gearbox across the model range. Entry-level trims will be RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) only while the higher variants will get Mercedes’ 4Matic AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) system.
It will be one of the final models to be underpinned by the brand’s MRA platform. The chassis features updates like modified double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, while the car will also be offered with optional air suspension. The company is expected to offer a rear-wheel steering system that allows up to 10 degrees of steering towards the rear for the first time in an E-Class.
The E-Class has always been one of the safest cars in its class. For the all-new model, Mercedes has given the E-Class various driving assistance systems from the larger S-Class and is also set to support level 3 autonomous driving capabilities using LiDAR-sensors.
While the manufacturer is yet to announce a date, latest media reports suggest that the Indian launch could be towards the end of 2023 or early-2024. The brand is likely to offer the long-wheelbase variant of the Next-Gen E-Class in the country which is set to be introduced a few weeks after the standard model’s global debut.
