The French car manufacturer, Renault appears to be ready to foray into the growing Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. According to a fresh media report, the company will begin its EV journey with the electric iteration of the Kiger subcompact SUV and Triber subcompact MPV. Codenamed Project RJ2K5, the Renault Kiger EV will enter production in the second half of 2026. It will be based on a dedicated EV architecture and target mass market with an affordable price tag below Rs 15 lakh.
The Renault Triber EV will be aimed at the family buyers and the fleet market. Both EVs are expected to feature locally sourced batteries, which will certainly help the carmaker achieve aggressive pricing. Renault is in talks with Tata AutoComp Systems Limited, which designs, develops, manufactures, and supplies auto components. The Renault Kiger EV and Triber EV will witness market launch in the financial year 2027.
Earlier, Renault revealed its plan to launch an A-segment electric car in India. It’s likely to be the Renault Kwid EV based on the Dacia Spring, which is estimated to cost below Rs 10 lakh. In Europe, the Dacia Spring is available with a 26.8kWh battery pack and delivers a claimed range of 295km (on WLTP cycle).
In 2025, Renault India will give a major update to its two popular models – Kiger and Triber. The third-generation Renault Duster launch has been planned for early 2026. The SUV is likely to be offered with the 1.3L HR13 turbo petrol engine, pushing out a maximum power of 156bhp. The lower variants might get Kiger’s 1.0L turbo petrol and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The Renault Duster 7-seater version has also been planned, but it will come after the arrival of the 5-seater version. Both SUVs will derive design inspiration from the Dacia Bigster SUV. The 7-seater SUV is expected to be around 230mm longer, and have a 43mm longer wheelbase than the new Duster 5-seater. In global markets, it will be offered with multiple powertrain options including mild hybrid, strong hybrid, and LPG.
