Tata Motors has revealed the much-awaited Harrier EV, an electric version of its top-selling Harrier SUV. The unveiled ceremony, held at Tata's plant in Pune, had us going hands-on with the production version of the vehicle. During the event, the Harrier EV was also seen performing some spine-tingling stunts, providing us a taste of what it can do. Tata Motors rolled out some important updates to the Harrier EV, an important addition to their expanding electric vehicle (EV) portfolio.
The highlighted feature of the Harrier EV is that it is based on an all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Tata Motors, as per, indicates that the electric SUV would also come with the feature which ensures better traction and stability. The AWD arrangement would deliver a nice drive on uneven and off-road roads with a smooth stable drive.
The other significant upgrade is the multi-link rear suspension. In contrast to the usual Harrier's torsion beam rear suspension, the Harrier EV's multi-link suspension provides better handling, stability, and comfort. The upgrade softens road bumps, which smooths out vibrations, particularly to passengers at the rear. Multi-link suspension improves safety on extreme maneuvers since it provides more lane change and cornering stability.
The Harrier EV's exterior design is very close to the ICE variant but with a few major differences. The most discernible upgrade is the new front grille. It is blanked off nowadays and has horizontal design themes. The vertical slats of the lower bumper make the front look newer, much like the Tata Curvv EV. New alloy wheels with an aerodynamic theme are at the flanks. The front doors also get a 3D "EV" badge instead of the standard "Harrier" badge on the ICE variant. In the cabin, the Harrier EV has been carried forward with the same level of premium detailing as the production Harrier, including a big 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment slab, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, and dual-zone climate control.
It also receives some new amenities on the electric version in the guise of premium connected car technology, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a premium 10-speaker audio system by JBL. Interior colour treatment is elevated to a premium white and grey finish.
The Tata Harrier EV will be fitted with a 75kWh battery pack that has a claimed single-charge range of more than 500 kilometers. It is thus an interesting choice for buyers looking for an electric SUV with decent range. The electric Harrier is based on Tata's new Acti.ev platform, which will be able to accommodate multiple drivetrain configurations such as AWD, RWD, and FWD. The platform also accommodates Vehicle to Load (V2L) and Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) charging, where the EV charges other devices or other cars. The twin-motor configuration in the Harrier EV will deliver massive performance, enabling the SUV to drive through various road conditions and terrain with ease. Tata Motors tested its mettle at the Pune show by driving the SUV up inclines and over a slalom, showcasing its AWD capability.
Safety has been the paramount concern for the Harrier EV, with multiple features to ensure the safety of passengers. The vehicle also gets 7 airbags, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), 360-degree camera, and front and rear parking sensors. It also gets electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, and an electronic park brake with auto hold. The Harrier EV also gets Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) pre-installed with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist for increased safety and convenience.
The Harrier EV will likely cost between Rs. 25 lakh - Rs. 30 lakh (ex-showroom), and it will be a very competitive product in the electric SUV space. It will be competing against vehicles like the Mahindra Be 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara and will give buyers a mix of performance, range, and features.
With its AWD feature, increased range, contemporary design, and more recent features, the Tata Harrier EV is emerging as a flagship model for Tata Motors' EV lineup. The company is eyeing further strengthening its position in the electric vehicle space, which is growing rapidly, with this launch.
