Popular Tata cars such as Harrier and Safari have been impressing Indian customers with their bossy look and powerful performance. Both SUVs are currently available with a diesel engine only. However, Tata Motors will soon introduce a petrol as well as an electric powertrain in both Harrier and Safari SUVs. Let's get into more details.
At present, Tata Harrier and Safari take power from the 2.0-litre diesel engines. This generates the maximum power of 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices include 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearboxes.
Now, the brand is also planning to bring a petrol variant of both SUVs by the next year. With the introduction of a petrol engine, Tata will offer a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine on Harrier and Safari. This 4-cylinder unit is capable of churning out 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque.
As for the electric powertrain, Tata has already started testing the Harrier EV and Safari. In fact, the close-to-production version of the Harrier EV was also showcased at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Show. The electric variants of both SUVs will be based on the brand's new Acti.EV platform. This platform is capable of supporting FWD, RWD and the 4WD drivetrains. These electric SUVs could come with a battery pack of 60-80 kWh, offering a certified range of around 500 km. The Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging capabilities.
The electric variant of these SUVs will rival MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, and the upcoming Mahindra XUV.e8 whereas the petrol variants will give competition to the Mahindra XUV 700, Hyundai Alcazar, and MG Hector Plus.
