Tata Motors currently has three CNG-powered models in its lineup namely the Altroz, Tigor and Tiago. The Altroz is the most recent launch, and its new twin CNG-tank setup is a big selling point of the new model. According to the latest reports, Tata Motors will be introducing the new setup on Tiago and Tigor as well.
Compared to the single CNG tank setup which takes up all of the boot space, the Altroz has a split tank setup that is fitted under the boot. The twin-cylinder helps free up 210 litres of boot space in the premium hatchback.
Now that its technology has grabbed eyeballs, Tata has filed a patent for its twin-cylinder CNG setup. The automaker says that this tech will be employed soon on the Tiago and Tigor CNG models, which currently have a large single-cylinder design. Since both vehicles are underpinned by Tata’s older X0 platform, it remains to be seen if it will retain the spare wheel like the Altroz.

The auto giant could also introduce its twin-cylinder CNG tech in the Nexon sometime in the future. Tata is planning to offer CNG in segments where it will be discontinuing diesel powertrains. The Nexon’s 1.5-litre turbo diesel will likely be replaced by a CNG powertrain in the next couple of years. Like the Tigor and Tiago, the Nexon is based on an older platform and will need a few modifications to fit the CNG cylinders under the boot. With petrol prices showing no signs of coming down, customers are looking at more frugal alternative options to buy instead.
