We have known for a while that Tata Motors is developing an all-electric version of the Punch in India. Now, latest spy shots of the upcoming micro-SUV reveals some new features. This is also the first time the EV has been spotted in the open. We take a closer look.
As you can see in the pictures, the test mule is clad in heavy camouflage. The Punch .EV looks very similar to its petrol counterpart in profile. But take a closer look and you will notice the rear disc brakes. In comparison, the ICE-powered Punch only offers drum brakes at the rear. There is also no visible charging slot. Expect it to be placed behind the fuel-lid cover like other Tata .EVs.
The interior of the Punch .EV also remains largely unchanged. The biggest difference is that there is no gear lever which has been replaced by a rotary drive selector. The inclusion of rear disc brakes also means that the micro-SUV will get an electronic parking brake. While the test mule was spotted sporting a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the manufacturer is likely to offer the electric vehicle with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen unit at the time of launch. Other notable features may include climate control, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear parking camera with sensors, and more.
The Punch is based on Tata’s modular ALFA platform. It has been designed to accommodate both .EV and ICE-powertrains, Further it does not require major modifications to switch the layouts.
While the company is yet to confirm the powertrain details, the vehicle is expected to get the same option as the Tigor .EV. The latter uses a 26 kWh battery pack that powers a single front-axle-mounted electric motor. Combined, they deliver a power output of 74 bhp with 170 Nm of peak torque. It is also believed that the brand might offer a larger battery pack option for the upcoming SUV.
Tata is expected to introduce the Punch .EV around the festive season - October 2023. Upon launch, it will directly rival the Citroen eC3. The electric vehicle will be priced between Rs 9 lakh to Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom).
