Toyota has launched a mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner in the global market. After its introduction in South Africa, the Fortuner MHEV is also likely to go on sale in other growing markets including India.
The mild-hybrid Fortuner houses a 2.8-litre diesel engine, paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This is the same mild-hybrid setup used in the Hilux MHEV that was introduced last year. The 48V hybrid system offers an additional power and torque of 16hp and 42Nm, respectively. The combined power and torque output stands at 199bhp and 500Nm, respectively. Both 2WD and 4WD variants are available, and the powertrain is paired with a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The MHEV system also has received an enhanced idle stop feature which provides faster throttle response and smoother engine restart.
In addition to the mild hybrid, Fortuner has received a Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite and a 360-degree camera. The ADAS tech offers lane assist, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and others.
Globally, both Fortuner MHEV and Hilux MHEV have been launched. While, in India, Toyota is only selling petrol, petrol-hybrid, petrol CNG, and diesel models. It is still unsure whether or not the brand will roll out the mild hybrid system for the Indian market.
