India’s #1
New Car Buying Platform
Indonesia-based bus manufacturer New Armada showcased its take on the Hilux Rangga pickup truck. Underpinned by the renowned IMV 0 platform, the Hilux Rangga SUV is designed for versatility, featuring a robust ladder frame chassis that supports various vehicle types, including light trucks. This platform, originally developed by Toyota in Thailand, is known for its durability and adaptability, making it ideal for the Hilux Rangga.
Under the hood of the Hilux Rangga concept lies a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This motor generates 147bhp and a peak torque of 343Nm, ensuring ample power for both urban driving and off-road adventures. Notably, this is the same unit used in the Toyota Innova Crysta. The power is channelled through a 6-speed automatic transmission. It also features a rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout for handling off-road duties.
The Hilux Rangga's design pays homage to the versatile vehicles of the past, reminiscent of the Toyota Kijang (now Innova Crysta) that could easily transition from a pickup to a passenger vehicle. The concept has been engineered with a shorter wheelbase of 2,750 mm than Hilux's 3,085 mm one, which aids in mobility while still maximising interior space. However, it resembles the Crysta's wheelbase and is longer than the Fortuner's base by 5 millimetres. The exterior boasts a more boxy silhouette with a higher roofline, creating a more spacious cabin for passengers.
It is best suited for families, ensuring ample legroom in the second and third rows. Its interior features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The cabin is further enhanced with dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows and multiple airbags, prioritising both comfort and safety.
It comes with LED projector headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs), enhancing visibility and aesthetic appeal. Safety features include a parking camera, parking sensors and an array of seatbelts for all rows, ensuring the well-being of every occupant.
The 16-inch alloy wheels are fitted with 215/70 all-terrain tyres, striking a balance between on-road comfort and off-road capability. New Armada has finished the concept in a two-tone green and black colour scheme for a bold and adventurous look.
While internal sources tell us about Toyota's potential launch of a smaller Land Cruiser FJ, the Hilux Rangga concept presents a compelling case for entering the Indian market as a 4x4 SUV that is competitively priced. Positioned above the Innova Crysta but below the Innova Hycross, the Hilux Rangga could meet the growing demand for spacious and affordable family vehicles.
