When Toyota Kirloskar Motors reintroduced the Innova Crysta earlier this year, it became the first automaker to sell two generations of the popular MPV side-by-side. The company had previously discontinued the earlier generation model when the new one arrived.
The reason behind Toyota’s change in strategy is because the New Innova Hycross is aimed towards private customers with its higher price, more features, and strong-hybrid option. The Crysta in contrast has been a popular choice for fleet buyers since it was launched in 2016. Now, the automaker has confirmed that the Crysta will be in production till at least 2025. Here is why.
Currently, Toyota has over 60,000 orders pending for the Innova Hycross and the Crysta. The latter is offered with a 2.4-litre diesel powertrain only that is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. A latest report says that while the Crysta is targeted at fleet owners, there is a decent demand for the MPV by chauffeur-driven private buyers too.
Launched last year in November, the Toyota Innova Hycross has a long waiting period as well. This is due to the global semiconductor shortage. The top-level ZX and ZX(O) variants are the worst affected, with waiting periods for the trims stretching to over 2 years currently. Toyota has actually temporarily stopped taking bookings for these variants.

As per certain media reports, the Japanese automaker has added a third shift in its production facility to reduce the waiting period for the Innova Hycross and Crysta. The brand would have added the shift earlier if not for the ongoing chip shortage.
The company was also planning to discontinue the Innova Crysta but the lack of semiconductors for the Hycross forced it to continue production of the former till March 2024. However, given the strong demand for the Crysta still, Toyota is likely to continue to sell it till the year 2025. Till date, the third-generation model has sold over 4 lakh units in India.
