We reported earlier that Toyota is developing an all-new SUV, which will be positioned below the Fortuner in developing markets. It was speculated to be based on the IMV0 platform that also underpins the Hilux Champ; however, some reports claim that the new SUV will be developed on the low-cost version of the existing TNGA-C platform.
The TNGA-C platform is flexible enough to accommodate different body styles and engine options. The Innova Hycross on sale in our market is also based on the same platform. It also underpins the Corolla Cross on sale in select international markets. This architecture could prove to be expensive for the new mini Fortuner, and Toyota could use the low-cost version of the platform.
Another thing is that the new mini Fortuner is not likely to be offered with a diesel engine. In fact, Toyota will focus on offering fuel efficient hybrid powertrain that is currently available in the Innova Hycross. Adding to it, the SUV will also receive a petrol engine. The petrol-only model is expected to get a 2.0L petrol engine that produces 173bhp and 209Nm of torque.
It will get a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with a strong hybrid system. This hybrid engine produces 184bhp and 188Nm torque. There is an electric motor that produces 206Nm of torque. The Innova Hycross hybrid comes with a front-wheel drive, e-CVT transmission with paddle shifters along with 3 driving modes - Eco, Normal and Power. The Hycross is claimed to offer a fuel efficiency of 23.24kmpl, and the similar numbers are expected with the new SUV.
An electric version could also be introduced at a later stage. Toyota will give the new SUV a Fortuner-like looks with high ground clearance, rugged body panels and 4x4 drivetrain. The new Toyota mini Fortuner is likely to be produced at Toyota's new Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar plant in Maharashtra. Production of the SUV is likely to begin in 2027.
