The rising demand for lifestyle SUVs are evident from the launches of multiple new models like Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the new Force Gurkha 5-door. Mahindra Thar is currently the country's top-selling lifestyle SUV, which will also receive a more modern & feature-loaded variant in near future. The success of Thar and Jimny have prompted more brands to enter the lifestyle SUV category.
Mahindra will launch a more practical and feature-loaded version of the Thar lifestyle SUV. Scheduled to make its debut in August 2024, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will ride on a longer wheelbase. The longer wheelbase and size allows Mahindra engineers to create more space inside the cabin and a bigger boot.
Rumoured to be called the Mahindra Thar Armada, the new lifestyle SUV will come with a fixed metallic roof and dual-pane sunroof. It comes equipped with features like LED lighting system, push button start, front & rear parking sensors, armrests, a larger digital driver's display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. Other features include bigger 19-inch wheels, 60:40 split folding rear seat, 6 airbags and auto dimming IRVM.
The Mahindra Thar Armada will also receive Level 2 ADAS tech, similar to the one offered in the Mahindra XUV700. It will be offered in 3 engine options - a 117bhp, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel, a 175PS, 2.2L turbo diesel and a 203PS, 2.0L turbo petrol. The higher-spec versions will come with a 4WD layout. For transmission duties, the new lifestyle SUV will either get a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
Tata Motors will also enter the lifestyle SUV category with the re-introduction of the iconic Sierra nameplate. The new gen Tata Sierra will be first offered with an electric powertrain. It will also receive an ICE version with petrol and diesel fuel options. The new Tata Sierra EV will be introduced in the country by the end of 2025.
The Tata Sierra EV is most likely to come in two seating configurations - the 5-seater and 4-seater lounge. The lounge variant will come with two electrically adjustable independent seats at the back. The SUV will have premium features like ADAS, ambient mood lighting, a digital instrument console and an electric sunroof.
The new generation Tata Sierra will be based on the Acti.ev platform that underpins the Punch EV and the Curvv EV. The new model is likely to receive a battery pack of around 80kWh capacity and dual electric motors for AWD setup.
