SUVs are in demand, which is evident from the sales of some of the popular SUVs in the past couple of years. In fact, most brands are now focusing on introducing new SUVs in the country. Indian buyers are also looking at fuel efficient cars, and hybrids are gaining popularity among SUV buyers in the country. In this article, we talk about the top 4 upcoming hybrid SUVs to be launched in the country over the period of next couple of years -
Maruti Suzuki will give a mid-life facelift to its popular crossover, the Fronx in 2025. It will also mark the debut of Maruti's in-house developed hybrid engine. The hybrid setup will comprise a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z12E petrol engine, a small battery pack of around 1.5-2kWh and one electric motor. The engine will act as a generator to charge the batter pack, while electric motor will act as a drivetrain.
Not just Fronx, this hybrid setup will also be offered on other Maruti Suzuki cars including Baleno and Swift. If reports are to be believed, the Fronx facelift could offer a mileage of over 35kmpl. In fact, the SUV is expected to offer more mileage than some of the CNG cars on sale in our market.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is also expected to get Level 1 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) kit. It will offer features like Lane Keep Assist, Lane Following Assist, Forward Collision Warning, High Beam Assist, Vehicle Departure Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and more.
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will introduce new 7-seater SUVs with hybrid powertrains in the country in 2025. Maruti Suzuki will launch the 7-seater derivative of the Grand Vitara, while Toyota Hyryder based 7-seater SUV is also under development. Both models will be based on Suzuki's Global C platform, which underpins the Brezza. However, the platform will be modified to accommodate a longer wheelbase model with added third-row seats.
Both models will be manufactured at Suzuki's upcoming production facility in Haryana. Adding to it, the new 7-seater SUVs are likely to be equipped with ADAS or advanced driver assistance system. The new SUVs will receive Toyota's 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with strong hybrid tech, which also powers the Grand Vitara and Hyryder. In the 5-seater version, the hybrid unit is claimed to return around 28kmpl. The 7-seater model should offer a mileage of over 25kmpl.
The 7-seater Grand Vitara will share most of its features with the 5-seater model. The new SUVs will receive a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument console, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable driver's seat and other.
At the launch of new Amaze, Honda Cars India confirmed to introduce 3 new SUVs in the country by 2027. These SUVs will be powered by either hybrid or electric powertrains. It is expected that the existing Elevate SUV will also receive a hybrid engine, which is the same unit available in the City hybrid. Moreover, Honda will introduce the Elevate EV and an all-new 3-row SUV based on an all-new SP2 platform.
The Honda Elevate SUV is designed and developed on Honda City's platform. The hybrid setup comprise of an Atkinson Cycle 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. The first motor works as an electric generator, while the second propels the vehicle. Power and Torque output stands at 126bhp and 253Nm, respectively. The City hybrid is claimed to offer a fuel efficiency of over 26kmpl and same could be offered with the new hybrid SUVs.
Maruti Suzuki India has increased prices of its entire model range from 1 February 2025.
