Volkswagen Tera Vs Skoda Kylaq - Similarities and Differences

Volkswagen Tera is the recently unveiled subcompact SUV from the German automaker, designed and developed in Brazil. Its production will also take place in Brazil for the domestic market and exports to Africa and Latin America. Volkswagen has no plans to bring in Tera to India; however, the carmaker has confirmed a sub-4 metre SUV based on the Skoda Kylaq. Both these compact SUVs share several similarities and differences, which are explained below.

Volkswagen Tera Vs Skoda Kylaq – Design

The new VW Tera is built on the MQB A0 platform, which also underpins the new-generation Volkswagen Polo hatchback in global markets. Whereas, the Skoda Kylaq has been designed on the India-specific MQB A0 IN architecture.

Volkswagen hasn’t yet revealed dimensions of the Tera, but it’s expected to measure above 4 metres in length. The Skoda Kylaq is a proper subcompact SUV measuring 3,995 mm in length, 1,783 mm in width and 1,619 mm in height.

The design and styling of the VW Tera are inspired by the bigger Tiguan SUV, featuring slim headlamps with two-part LED DRL signature and bumper and grille with black finish and air intakes at the edges. This SUV carries a pronounced shoulder crease with muscular fenders and the A and B-pillars and roof in black finish at the side profile. The rear section sports a bumper with gloss black garnish, and stubby taillamps connected via a black trim.

The Skoda Kylaq features the brand’s new ‘Modern Solid’ design language with an aggressive-looking front. It features Skoda’s signature grille, LED projector headlamps with split setup and LED DRLs up top and pronounced creases on the bonnet. The dual-tone front bumper has a massive cladding. Its top-end variant comes with the 17-inch rims, while the cladding and roof rails are available right from the entry-level variant. At the back, it features squared-out taillamps with unique T-shaped lighting signature.

Volkswagen Tera Vs Skoda Kylaq – Interior

The interior of VW Tera shares resemblance with the modern Volkswagen compact models. It comes with a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system along with the Taigun-inspired touch-based HVAC panel, centre console area and steering wheel. The carmaker has revealed that its new compact SUV features a wireless phone charger, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, ambient lights, connected car tech and ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite.

Skoda’s Kylaq, however, misses out on the ADAS tech. It does offer a wireless phone charger, leather upholstery, powered sunroof, ambient lighting, auto dimming IRVM, 6-way powered and ventilated front seats, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, leather-wrapped steering with chrome garnish, In-car connectivity suite and several other features.

Volkswagen Tera Vs Skoda Kylaq – Engine

Volkswagen hasn’t yet revealed the engine specifications of the Tera compact SUV. However, it is expected to be offered with a Polo-sourced 1.0L TSI petrol engine and flex fuel options in Brazil.

The Skoda Kylaq is available with a 115bhp, 1.0L turbo petrol engine only. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. This compact SUV accelerates 0 to 100kmph in 10.5 seconds, and attains a top speed of 188kmph.
