• Volvo EX90 to be the new flagship electric SUV of the company • Expected to come will advance safety features • Set to be underpinned by an all-new platform.
Unlike its main competitors, Swedish automaker Volvo currently lacks a full-sized EV in its line-up. The company makes only a few smaller EVs like the C40 Recharge and the XC40 Recharge. However, this is all set to change with the reveal of Volvo’s flagship EV SUV, the EX90 on 9th of November 2022. Though further details are under wraps, the automaker claims the new model will offer the best standard safety features of any Volvo to date.
Volvo says the trick to better Safety Features is an improved "understanding" of both the driver and the environment. The new EX90 is reported to feature an array of cutting-edge sensors including radar, LiDAR and cameras. Inside, capacitive steering wheel sensors and cameras will detect inattentiveness and gradually take stricter actions to protect you, including bringing the vehicle to a complete stop at the side of the road and calling for help.
Some of the safety features coming in the new Volvo EX90 have been seen before. GM’s Super Cruise checks if your eyes are on the road, while Tesla vehicles will disable Autopilot and come to a halt if your hands aren’t on the steering wheel. Volvo is hoping that it offers the best safeguards among the competition, and LiDAR may provide an advantage.
It's safe to say the EX90 will represent a change of tack. Instead of competing with the Tesla Model Y and other 'entry' luxury SUVs or crossovers, Volvo is more likely to aim squarely at the high end. This vehicle could serve as a halo product that draws EV buyers to the brand, even if they ultimately buy something more affordable.

The Volvo EX90 is expected to come with an all-new powertrain set-up. Since the electric SUV is underpinned by a new platform, expect it to be different to the powertrains offered on the likes of the C40, XC40 and Polestar 2 EVs. All-wheel-drive is expected to be standard in the new EX90. Volvo will offer multiple battery sizes on its new EVs, including standard and long-range versions. The latter is capable of up to 498km between charges.
