First launched in January 2020, the Tata Nexon EV has been one of the best-selling electric vehicles on sale in the country. The popular EV received its first major facelift in September 2023. The new model has been an instant hit, helping Tata Motors to register close to 50,000 sales per month. The all-new Tata Nexon electric comes with significantly revised exterior, all-new interiors and improved powertrain performance.
The Nexon EV is available with two battery options - 30kWh and 40.5kWh. The bigger battery pack can offer a range of up to 465km on a single charge. It features a front-axle mounted electric motor. The SUV also supports multiple charging options including a DC fast charging system.
The new Tata Nexon EV comes loaded with several segment-leading features, which gives it a competitive advantage. The SUV comes with an all-LED lighting system including sequential LED daytime running lamps, LED tail-lamps, LED turn indicators and LED headlamps. It is fitted with a segment-leading 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with all-new user interface, which supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and voice navigation.
The SUV is fitted with a new customisable 10.25-inch digital driver's display with navigation display, a twin-spoke illuminated steering wheel, a new touch-based HVAC controls with toggle switches, and connected car tech. Other features include a 360-degree camera, a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, air purifier, single-pane sunroof, JBL-branded sound system, voice commands, OTA updates and others. The homegrown maker has added a new Arcade.ev app suite that allows customers to stream OTT platforms such as Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and the works.
The styling of the new Tata Nexon EV is inspired from the Curvv SUV Coupe that made its public debut in concept avatar at Auto Expo 2023. The new model is claimed to be more aerodynamically designed to offer more range. In fact, the new LED lighting system is claimed to be more energy efficient. The front is heavily modified to offer a more aggressive look, featuring a single-tone, body-coloured finish for the upper body panel. The headlamp housing is designed in trapezoidal form, while the grille has functional air vents.
There is a full-width LED light bar that runs across the nose, which is inspired from the Curvv SUV concept. In fact, the Punch EV also has the same front look with full-width LED light bar and Tata Logo positioned between the grille and LED DRLs. The light band is functional, as it shows the charging status.
The SUV retains the split headlamp setup with sequential LED DRLs on top and main headlamp unit placed on the lower bumper. The lower bumper also accommodates a large air intake with thick black plastic cladding, and a faux-silver skid plate. The side profile looks largely identical to the previous model, except for the new set of alloys. The rear has connected LED tail-lamps, a roof-mounted spoiler and new bumper with contrasting black and silver trims.
In terms of proportions, the new MODEL is 3994mm in length, 1811mm in width and 1616mm in height. The SUV has a wheelbase of 2498mm, while boot space stands at 350-litres. It offers a ground clearance of 190mm that is more than sufficient to tackle Indian road conditions.
The new Nexon EV comes with a dual-tone black and purple interior scheme with use of several glossy panels. The dashboard layout is similar to the ICE Nexon, featuring layered design finished in different textures and materials, Tata Motors has used multiple carbon fibre-like trim, soft touch materials and piano black finish around several body parts. Instead of a rotary dial, the new MODEL comes with a traditional-looking gear selector.
The dashboard is dominated by a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, which has an all-new user interface and looks premium. The infotainment is compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also comes with a new Arcade.ev app suite that allows users to stream OTT platforms such as Prime Video, Disney+, Hotstar and others. There is a twin-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo.
It also has a new 10.25-inch digital driver display with navigation display. This system is customisable and the user can change the display look based on his/her likings. There is a new touch-based panel for HVAC controls with toggle switches, and other functions. The SUV is loaded with several segment-leading features like a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, single-pane sunroof, JBL sound system, and others.
For safety and security, the new Nexon EV comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC (electronic stability program) and three-point seat belts for all seats. The SUV also gets a 360-degree surround view camera, front & rear parking sensors, ISOFIX anchors, hill descent and ascent control, all-wheel disc brakes, and others.
The new Nexon EV is available in 4 trim levels and in total of 15 variants. The new Tata Nexon Electric is available at a starting price of Rs 1249000 which goes up to Rs 1719000 for the top-end variant (ex-showroom).
The new Tata Nexon EV is available broadly in two specs - Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR). The MR range is fitted with the 30kWh battery pack, while the LR is fitted with a larger 40.5kWh battery. Both models come with front-axle mounted electric motors.
The MR offers 127.2hp and 215Nm of torque, while the LR produces 142.68hp and 215Nm. Compared to the previous model, the torque output for the MR and LR variants dropped by 30Nm and 38Nm, respectively. The top LR variant is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph acceleration in just 8.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 150kmph. The new MODEL is available with 3 drive modes - Eco, City and Sport.
The permanent magnet synchronous motor is claimed to be 20kg lighter, and has better cooling and battery management. The SUV also has 4-level brake regeneration, which can be controlled through the paddle shifters.
The Nexon EV MR variant is claimed to offer an ARAI certified range of 325km, while the LR offers a range of 465km. The range of the LR model is increased by 12km. Both variants are offered with a 7.2kW AC charger as standard, which charges the battery from 10 to 100% in 4.3 hours for the MR. The same charger took 6 hours to charge the LR's battery from 10 to 100%.
Using a DC fast charger, the batteries can achieve 10 to 80% charging in just 56 minutes. This electric SUV also has V2V (Vehicle-To-Vehicle) and V2L (Vehicle-To-Load) charging capabilities. The SUV is claimed to feature new tyres that have the lowest rolling resistance in the country.
The Tata Nexon EV currently has no direct rival in the country. However, it impacts the sales of the Mahindra XUV400 that comes at a similar price tag.
