The electric SUV segment is gradually expanding in India as OEMs are introducing new models to cater the increasing market demand. BMW recently introduced the iX1 LWB (Long Wheelbase) premium electric SUV, which will soon get a strong competitor from BYD – the Sealion 7. Both EVs offer impressive range, new-age tech and a premium experience. Here, we compare them, and break down their prices, features, and powertrain specifications.
BYD Sealion 7 is slated to go on sale in India on 17th February. This electric SUV will be offered in two variants: Premium RWD and Performance AWD, which are expected to be priced between Rs 45 lakh – Rs 49 lakh (ex-showroom). Booking windows for the EV opened last month with a token sum of Rs 70,000. Additionally, the carmaker announced an exclusive promotional offer under which BYD will give a contribution of Rs 70,000 towards the price of the vehicle. Furthermore, buyers will get a 7 year/ 1,50,000 km warranty and a complementary 7kW AC home charger with free installation. Deliveries for the first 70 units of the Sealion 7 will start on 7th March, 2025.
Launched at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show, the BMW iX1 LWB is being offered at an introductory price of Rs 49 lakh (ex-showroom, Pan India). India is the first RHD (right-hand drive) market for this electric SUV, and it is also the first locally assembled EV from the German automaker.
Globally, the Sealion 7 is offered in two variants – Premium and Performance – equipped with an 82.56kWh battery pack. The Premium variant offers a maximum power of 313bhp and 380Nm of torque along with the claimed NEDC range of 567km. It does 0 to 100kmph in 6.7 seconds. The Performance variant promises a claimed range of 542km on a single charge. Its power and torque outputs stand at 530bhp and 690Nm, which are pretty impressive. With this powertrain setup, it an sprint from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.5 seconds. While the Premium variant features an RWD system, the Performance comes with an AWD layout.
BMW’s electric SUV uses a 66.4kWh battery pack and delivers an MIDC range of 531km on a full charge. It has a front axle-mounted electric motor, pushing out a peak power of 204bhp and 250Nm of torque. This EV can do 0 to 100kmph in 8.6 seconds. The German automaker claims that iX1 LWB supports DC fast charging at speeds of up to 130kW.
Similar to other BYD EVs, the Sealion 7 comes with a host of advanced features including a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. This electric SUV also offers an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, ventilated front seats, HUD (head-up display), a panoramic glass roof, 12 speakers sound system, wireless phone charger, vehicle-to-load (V2L), powered tailgate, etc. The safety kit includes 11 airbags, a 360 degree camera, hill hold control, Isofix child seat mounts, and front and rear parking sensors. It also has a ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite offering features such as blind spot detection, forward collision alert and lane departure assist.
BMW’s electric SUV is equally well-equipped. It has the driver-oriented ‘Widescreen Curved Display’, which includes a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Other key features include a 205W 12-speaker Harman Kardon system, dual zone climate control, Veganza leatherette upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and rear seats (which can be reclined up to 28.5 degrees) with 40:20:40 split-folding function. The iX1 LWB has eight airbags, a park assist feature, electronic parking brake, Isofix anchors and Level 2 ADAS suite.
The BYD Sealion 7 is 4,830 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,620 mm tall. It has a 2,930 mm long wheelbase. This electric SUV comes with a boot space of 520 litres, which can be expanded to 1,789 litres with the rear seats folded down. Additionally, it has a 58 litres frunk.
The new BMW electric SUV measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width and 1,612 mm in height along with a wheelbase of 2,800mm. Compared to the Sealion 7, it is shorter and narrower.
