Maruti Suzuki demonstrated the flex fuel technology in India with a Wagon R prototype. The new demonstration is part of the brand’s evaluation of the fuel technology for the Indian market. The prototype has been designed to run on a blend of ethanol and petrol, between E20 (20 percent) and E85 (85 percent).
Maruti has stated that the prototype has been developed and designed locally with support from Suzuki Japan, its partner. The prototype model was unveiled in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, Road Transport and Highways.
To be able to run on flex fuel, vehicles need a few modifications over regular gasoline engines. This is to ensure that the motor is able to handle the lower calorific value and corrosive nature of ethanol.
The Maruti Wagon R flex fuel prototype features a new fuel system tech like heated fuel rail, cold start assist and an ethanol sensor for ethanol percentage detection. There are also updates to the engine management system, fuel injectors, fuel pump, and other components to make the motor more durable. This engine is also going to conform to the new and stricter BS6 Phase-II emission norms.
Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited stated, “the ethanol fuel-based Wagon R Flex Fuel prototype operating on E85 fuel will help reduce tailpipe emissions by 79 percent in comparison to a conventional gasoline Wagon R, while ensuring the same power and performance.”
The automaker is expected to introduce its first flex fuel model in the compact segment by 2025. Ahead of the adaption to the new fuel system, Maruti will focus on making all its models E20 compliant by March 2023.
Maruti is also significantly pushing other alternate fuels such as CNG and bio-CNG. The brand currently has the widest range of CNG cars in India. The company is also gradually developing its strong-hybrid lineup, and a pure electric model is slated to launch in 2025.
Earlier this year, Toyota had showcased its latest-Gen Corolla Hybrid that was modified to run on ethanol-blended fuel as a pilot project and tech demonstrator. The Corolla Hybrid was powered by a 2.0-litre strong-hybrid powertrain that is capable of running on E85 ethanol.
