The luxury MPV segment is relatively niche in India. However, it does have some premium offerings in this space including the Toyota Vellfire, Kia Carnival, Lexus LM 350h and Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The Kia Carnival, India’s top-selling luxury MPV, entered in its fourth-generation in late 2024. It will soon face a tough competition from MG’s new M9, which was showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show last month. Here, we have stacked up these two models against each other to make a spec-based comparison.
MG M9 will be the second premium offering from the carmaker to be retailed via its new MG Select premium dealership network. Prices of this luxury MPV will be announced in March, 2025. However, it is estimated to come with a price tag of around Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom). Bookings for the M9 are already underway, while deliveries promised to start in April.
The Kia Carnival is available in a single, fully-loaded Limousine variant, featuring seven seats (2+2+3) configuration. It has been priced at Rs 63.9 lakh (ex-showroom).
The M9 is essentially the re-badged Maxus Mifa 9, which is sold in China and select global markets. It is an electric MPV featuring a 90kWh lithium battery and a front axle-mounted electric motor. The e-motor pushes out a claimed power of 245bhp and 350Nm of torque. This premium MPV comes with a FWD (front-wheel drive) system and offers a WLTP claimed range of 430km.
The Kia Carnival, on the other hand, is being offered with a 2.2L diesel engine paired to an 8-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. This setup delivers power to the front wheels. This setup delivers a maximum power of 193bhp and 441Nm of torque. Kia claims that the Carnival offers a fuel efficiency of 14.85kmpl.
MG’s new luxury MPV will be packed with several advanced features. While its full feature list is yet to be revealed, the carmaker has confirmed that it will offer a Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) suite, powered front and rear seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, fold-out ottoman seats, two sunroofs – a single pane for the front and a dual-pane for the rear, rear entertainment screens and powered rear sliding doors.
As mentioned above, the Carnival comes in a single variant loaded with premium goodies such as the dual 12.3-inch curved displays, a 11-inch HUD (head-up display), a 12-spearker Bose sound system, wireless charging pads, three zone climate control, dual electric sunroofs (but smaller than the M9), a 4-spoke steering wheel, powered second-row captain chairs with ventilation, heating and extendable leg support, a 12-way powered driver’s seat, powered sliding rear doors and a powered tailgate.
On the safety front, the Kia Carnival offers Level 2 ADAS suite, 8 airbags, front, rear and side parking sensors, 360 degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill assist control, rear disc brakes, electronic stability control and more. The ADAS suite offers features lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front collision warning and avoidance assist, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, etc.
Dimensionally, the MG M9 is relatively bigger and spacious than the Kia Carnival. It’s overall length, width and height stand at 5,200 mm, 2,000 mm and 1,840 mm, respectively. This electric MPV has a wheelbase of 3,200 mm.
Kia’s luxury MPV, on the other hand, measures 5,155 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width and 1,775 mm in height. It sits on a 3,090 mm long wheelbase.
