Besides showcasing concepts, Tata Motors has also unveiled the CNG versions of its mini-SUV the Punch and premium hatchback - the Altroz at the Delhi Auto Expo 2023. The Tata Punch i CNG and Altroz i CNG feature the company’s dual-cylinder technology that allows more space inside the cabin. We therefore take a closer look at both these models.

The Tata Altroz i CNG and Punch i CNG remain more or less the same as their petrol-powered counterparts except for their badging. The interiors are also the same. Both models are expected to come with features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and cruise control. Additional equipment on the Altroz CNG could include voice-activated sunroof, push-button start/stop, ambient lighting, and auto rain-sensing wipers.

Powering the Altroz i CNG and Punch i CNG would be a 1.2-litre three-pot Revotron engine that would make 85 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque in petrol mode while shifting to CNG we can expect the figures drop to 73 bhp and 93 Nm, respectively. There will be a single transmission on offer, a 5-speed manual while an AMT may be introduced later.
Both models feature Tata’s innovative twin-cylinder technology, using two 30-litre tanks instead of a single large 60-litre CNG tank. This results in more efficient packaging with no effect on the boot space, unlike its rivals.
While Tata has not revealed any details, the Altroz i CNG and Punch i CNG are expected to be launched around the second quarter of 2023. Pricing-wise, expect both models to cost around Rs 1 lakh more than their petrol-only counterparts. Currently, prices for the Tata Altroz range from Rs 6.35 lakh - Rs 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom) while the Punch is priced between Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9.54 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Punch i CNG does not have any direct competitors. Tata Altroz i CNG on the other hand will compete with Maruti Baleno CNG and Toyota Glanza CNG in the premium hatchback segment.
