BMW India has just launched a new variant of its popular compact SUV model, the new X3 M40i in India. Compared to the regular model, this performance-oriented model gets sportier exterior design elements, added features and a new powertrain option.
The 2023 X3 M40i gets BMW’s M Sport package as standard. This includes M-specific parts like the blacked-out kidney grille, aerodynamic outside rear view mirrors and 20-inch alloy wheels.
In addition to these changes, BMW has also introduced Matrix adaptive LED headlights. Other changes include red brake caliper and two new exterior colours - Black Sapphire and Brooklyn Grey.
On the inside, the new X3 M40i features an all-black interior, M specific seatbelt, carbon-fiber inserts and a leather wrapped steering wheel for added sportiness.
The X3 M40i is quite similar to the standard model in terms of features. It gets dual 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, the latest iDrive 7 OS, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, tri-zone climate control, ambient lighting, wireless charging, a HUD, premium audio setup from Harman Kardon, a panoramic sunroof, and more.
Powering the X3 M40i is a 3.0-litre, in-line-six turbo-petrol engine that makes 360 bhp with 500 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. BMW claims the SUV can sprint to 100 kmph in just 4.9 seconds while top speed is limited to 250 kmph.
Being the performance-oriented version, the X3 M40i also gets a few mechanical changes like adaptive suspension, variable sport steering, an electronic locking differential, and M Sport brakes.
The X3 M40i is priced at Rs 86.50 lakh (ex-showroom). It will come to India as a CBU (completely built unit) import and will be available in limited numbers. Bookings for the sports SUV have commenced with a token amount of Rs 5 lakh.
In India, the X3 M40i has no direct competition in terms of price. In performance terms, its closest rival is the Porsche Macan S that makes similar peak power and torque figures. However, with a price tag of Rs 1.43 crore, the Porsche is over Rs 50 lakh more expensive than the BMW.
