Produced by the Italian automaker, Fiat Punto was one of the most popular hatchbacks by the brand. It was first introduced in 1993 and was known for its fun-to-drive nature. The Punto went through three generations during its presence in the market. However, the brand ended its production in 2018 after witnessing low sales and switched its focus to SUVs and electric cars.
Oliver Francois, CEO of Fiat, has commented that the brand is possibly to bring the new Punto in an electric avatar. It is still not official, however, the brand's head hinted that they are open to bringing such an idea to execution.
As of now, Fiat has only indicated the introduction of a sleek and sporty Punto EV. However, no such model is under development. If it comes to the market, it would be based on the e-CMP platform by Stellantis Group, which also underpins Peugeot e-208 and other similarly-sized models. If not then the brand could use the STLA small construction which will be used by the future Fiat 500.
If it returns, the new Fiat Punto EV could be a compact, city-friendly electric car with a blend of modern tech and classic Fiat charm.
The electric Punto is expected to have a 50-60 kWh battery, offering a range of 300-400 km range. Seeing the current craze of electric cars and modern technology, the brand might offer digital cockpit, ADAS, and connected car technology for the Punto EV.
If Fiat manages to price it competitively and offer strong features, the Punto EV could be a game-changer in the budget electric hatchback segment.
