Skoda Kylaq has entered the Indian market with the starting price of Rs 7.89 lakh. The sub 4m SUV is a direct rival to the popular Tata Nexon. So, here comes a quick comparison of what actually sets the Skoda Kylaq and Tata Nexon apart.
The Skoda Kylaq boasts a sleek design, inspired by the Kushaq. It features attractive design elements such as blacked-out butterfly grille and split LED headlamps along with massive 17-inch alloy wheels. The sharp lines and the crystalline LED taillamps carve a rich look on the premium, edgy lines.
On the other hand, the Tata Nexon had recently witnessed a facelift wearing a slicker, coupe-like profile with a new slimmer grille, split LED headlamps, and Y-shaped LED taillights. To further the sporty look, it also comes with diamond-cut 16-inch alloys and body cladding.
On the inside, the Skoda Kylaq distinguishes itself from the competition with segment-first 6-way electrically adjustable ventilated seats, dual digital displays, leatherette upholstery, and ambient lighting. Adequate space, enough boot capacity at 446 litres to up to 1,265, and a 60:40 split rear seat make the Kylaq versatile enough for families.
Besides this, the feature-loaded cabin in the Tata Nexon includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and ventilated front seats. The inside feels premium with a new touch panel for AC controls and illumination of the Tata logo and high-end upholstery.
Both SUVs come with six airbags, electronic stability control, and ABS with EBD. The Kylaq introduces new safety features like multi-collision brakes and electronic brake force distribution. Nexon continues its 5-star Global NCAP safety record, but toppers on higher trims get upgraded with a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitor, and hill hold assist.
The Kylaq has a single 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine churning out 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque, mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Power and efficiency are well-balanced, though official mileage figures have yet to be disclosed.
In comparison, the Nexon is available with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which produces a good 118 bhp, 170 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, churning out 113 bhp and 260 Nm. Nexon is available in manual, AMT, and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Diesel Nexon comes with an impressive mileage of up to 24.08 km/l with AMT, hence best suited for long-distance drives.
The Skoda Kylaq is designed at an attractive price of Rs. 7.89 lakh, placing it spot on the compact SUV space. During its time, Tata Nexon starts from Rs. 8.00 lakh and reaches Rs. 15.50 lakh for the top model, with 59 variants covering a swathe of options for various customers.
The Skoda Kylaq and Tata Nexon set value with modern design, strong safety, and an abundance of features in their interiors. Where the Kylaq will attract a buyer who is seeking a very refined, high-tech SUV with distinctive Skoda design and branding, the Nexon will suit customers with rather wider choices of engines and has proved to be successful in this line of safety records. Selecting between either will be very much driven by specific needs about the features, the choice of engine, and budget flexibility.
