Competition in the midsize SUV segment is getting fiercer, with models like the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos and Toyota Hyryder leading the sales charts. Aiming to stay ahead in the game, OEMs are preparing to give generation updates to their best-selling SUVs. Here’s a closer look at the key details of these four popular SUVs, which are set to witness a generation shift.
The Kia Seltos is one of the top-selling midsize SUVs in the country. The South Korean automaker is all set to give the SUV a generation change in 2026, featuring comprehensive design changes, feature enhancements and mechanical upgrades. The major highlight of the new Kia Seltos could be the introduction of a hybrid powertrain. The all-new model might be offered with the 1.6L hybrid setup that includes a 1.6L turbo petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery pack. Its combined power output ranges from 227bhp to 242bhp, depending on the variant. The 1.5L petrol and diesel engines will also be carried forward to the new-gen Seltos.
The new Seltos is likely to come with significantly improved styling inspired by the EV5, along with an upmarket interior. The carmaker might improve its material quality and introduce several new features such as a revised multi-layered dashboard, new two-spoke steering wheel, new dual-tone seat upholstery, updated door trims and headrests and ambient lighting.
Maruti Suzuki has started testing the new-generation Grand Vitara, and one of its test mules was recently caught on camera. The design and styling are likely to be revised heavily, especially at the front end. The all-new Grand Vitara is likely to feature a newly designed and more upright grille, pronounced LED headlamps, revised bumper with LED fog lamp housing, new front skid plate and wider air inlet. The side profile could be updated with the newly designed Y-shaped alloy wheels. The SUV might get sharper LED taillamps connected via a light bar and a redesigned trunk lid.
On the feature front, the new Maruti Grand Vitara is expected to offer a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), dual-pane sunroof, a larger touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a fully digital instrument cluster. The powertrain setup might remain unchanged. The new Grand Vitara will continue to come with the 1.5L mild hybrid and 1.5L Toyota’s strong hybrid options.
Toyota’s re-badged version of the Maruti Grand Vitara – Hyryder – will also enter its second generation. However, the launch timeline of the new Toyota Hyryder is yet to be revealed. Similar to the new Grand Vitara, Toyota’s SUV is expected to receive most of the design changes at the front end. The SUV might get a slightly revised grille and bumper, updated headlamp clusters and other minor tweaks. The overall looks could be refreshed further with a new set of alloy wheels, a tweaked rear bumper and new taillamps.
The all-new Toyota Hyryder is expected to come with the 1.5L TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine paired to a 79bhp, electric motor and a 177.6V lithium-ion battery. Maruti Suzuki’s mild-hybrid powertrain 1.5L K25C engine will also be on offer. It will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox and AWD (all-wheel drive) system. It can also be had with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The strong hybrid powertrain is available only with an eCVT automatic gearbox.
The third-generation Hyundai Creta is likely to arrive in 2027. At this stage details of the SUV’s new model are scanty. However, the major change is likely to come in the form of the hybrid powertrain. Reports suggest that the South Korean automaker will drop the diesel engine from the Creta lineup. The OEM aims to shift towards hybrid technology due to the upcoming BS7 emission norms. Upgrading diesel engines to comply with the new emission standards would require significant investment, making hybrid technology a more affordable and practical alternative. Comprehensive design and feature upgrades are also expected for the new Hyundai Creta.
