Despite rising focus on EVs, India have witnessed the increase in demand for hybrid cars. In fact, most of the brands are now planning to enter the hybrid space along with EVs. Japanese car manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are aiming to tap the hybrid segment by adding multiple models in the country. In this article, we talk about top 5 hybrid cars available in our market and their fuel efficiency.
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is one of the premium offering from the Japanese automaker is known for its high fuel efficiency. It comes with both mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid engine choices. These include a 1.5-litre mild hybrid system (101bhp/137Nm) with FWD and AWD, a 1.5-litre strong-hybid tech (114 bhp) with the eCVT.
The strong hybrid model is claimed to offer an excellent fuel efficiency of 27.97kmpl, making it the most fuel efficient model in the segment. Not just the strong hybrid model, the Hyryder mild-hybrid model delivers an impressive ARAI-certified mileage of 21.12kmpl.
The Grand Vitara shares its platform, engine options and features with the Toyota Hyryder. Both SUVs are manufactured at Toyota's plant; however, the SUVs are based on Suzuki's Global-C platform. In fact, the smart hybrid engine is the same that powers the Brezza.
The SUV gets the same 1.5L strong hybrid engine that powers the Hyryder. While the smart hybrid unit is claimed to deliver a mileage of around 19.38kmpl to 21.11kmpl, the strong hybrid model delivers an ARAI certified mileage of 27.97kmpl. In real world conditions, the Grand Vitara Hybrid returns a mileage of around 24-25kmpl.
The new City hybrid sedan comes with best entry-level hybrid system in the Indian market. While Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are using the 3-cylinder, 1.5L petrol engine, the Honda City hybrid comes with a 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine. It gets an Atkinson Cycle 1.5L, 4-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors that claims to offer a mileage of 26.5kmpl.
The petrol engine produces 98bhp with electric motor it offers 109bhp. The combined torque output stands at 253Nm. The City e:HEV also comes with start/stop technology and features a single, fixed-gear ratio and three drive modes - Engine, EV and Hybrid.
The Innova Hycross is one of the most-selling MPVs in the country. It offers spacious cabin, Toyota's reliability and a highly fuel efficient hybrid engine. The new MPV is based on Toyota's TNGA-C front-wheel-drive platform, which also underpins the Corolla Cross. The Hycross is available with two powertrains - 2.0L, 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle and 2.0L petrol. Coupled to an e-Drive gearbox, the strong hybrid setup offers a combined power output of 184bhp.
On the other hand, the gasoline engine produces 172bhp and 205Nm of torque. It is paired to a CVT automatic gearbox. While the naturally-aspirated petrol engine is claimed to deliver an ARAI certified mileage of 16.13kmpl, the strong hybrid unit returns a mileage of 23.24kmpl.
Similar to the Hyryder and Grand Vitara, the Suzuki Invicto is the re-badged version of the Toyota Innova Hycross. It is the most expensive Maruti Suzuki car and sold through NEXA premium dealership network. The MPV is available in two trims - Zeta and Alpha+ - priced between Rs 25.21 lakh and Rs 28.92 lakh. It is built on a monocoque chassis using Toyota's TNGA-C High platform.
The Suzuki Invicto is equipped with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, offering a combined power output of 186bhp. The engine is transversely mounted, sending power to the front wheels. This 3-row MPV accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in just 9.5 seconds. It is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 23.24kmpl.
