Tata Motors is preparing a wide range of new SUVs and electric vehicles for the Indian market. The company is currently struggling to increase sales and its EV dominance is under threat from the likes of MG Motor India and Mahindra. The homegrown automaker will introduce the electric version of the Harrier SUV in the next couple of months.
Tata Motors is also testing the facelifted versions of the Punch and Altroz, which are likely to arrive before the end of this year. Adding to it, Tata Motors is preparing an electric version of the Safari SUV. Tata Motors is betting big on the two upcoming SUVs - Sierra and Avinya to drive sales in the market.
Tata Motors has confirmed that the much-awaited Sierra lifestyle SUV will be launched in the country in the second half of 2025, most probably in Oct-Nov. The company will follow the Curvv strategy, and will introduce the Sierra EV first and ICE version a month after. The Tata Sierra ICE was showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, while the EV was unveiled at the 2024 Auto Expo.
The Tata Sierra ICE version will be powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder direct injection turbocharged petrol engine that was recently revealed at the 2025 Auto Expo. This engine is capable of producing 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm and 3,500rpm. The turbo petrol engine is benefited with the dual cam phasing, a viable oil pump and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. This engine is claimed to offer better torque from lower in the rev range due to its water-cooled variable geometry turbocharged.
The diesel version of the SUV will get the same 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that powers the Harrier and Safari. This engine produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer.
It is early to comment whether the Sierra will come with 4x4 or AWD setup. The SUV will be based on the ATLAS platform, which is claimed to be versatile enough to accommodate 4x4 drivetrain.
The Sierra EV is expected to share the battery pack with the Harrier EV, which will get a 75kWh battery. The electric SUV will come with dual-motor AWD setup and is expected to offer a range of up to 500km in a single charge.
In order to make it a big success, Tata Motors will add several high-end features including a triple screen layout in the Sierra. The SUV will also receive LEVEL 2 ADAS tech, multi-powered driver seat, auto dimming IRVM, dual-zone climate control, ventilated seats and others.
Tata Motors will introduce two products under the Avinya luxury nameplate. The company will first launch a Sportback in 2026, while a new SUV based on the Avinya X concept is also under development. It is reported that Tata Motors is planning to price the new electric SUV aggressively.
The price of the Tata Avinya is reportedly to shock Mahindra. It is likely to be priced as low as Rs 25 lakh, which will make the Avinya a direct rival to the Mahindra XEV 9e. For people not in the know, Tata Motors had showcased the Avinya concept in April 2022. The new Tata Avinya will mark the debut of Tata's "Gen 3 architecture."
The Tata Avinya X concept based SUV could be offered with 5, 6 and 7-seat layout, and the 3-row model could be the flagship model in the electric brand line-up. The third-gen Tata platform is likely to be based on JLR's EMA platform. It is expected that Tata Motors could also develop two more body styles - a 4.4 meter long SUV and a larger 4.9 meter luxury UV.
