Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce its all-new CLA on March 13, a significant moment in the luxury car maker's entry-level luxury car division. The global unveiling is over a year since the initial concept of the CLA was unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September 2023. The vehicle will be based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), which will form the basis of a new generation of compact cars. Let's get into the most important facts regarding this much-awaited model.
The new CLA will boast a new design that's inspired by the original model. The vehicle will have a coupe roofline, giving the vehicle a sleek and sporty appearance. Test vehicles have shown that the front will consist of wraparound LED headlamps with an unusual three-pointed star LED signature. The front grille will also be revised, maintaining the brand's individuality. The rear will see a full-width LED light bar, linking the tail-lamps with a similar-star-like LED signature. The overall stance of the car will be low and sporty, with slightly flared haunches, hinting at its sporting character.
The interior of the CLA will be leading the way with advancements in technology with the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The system will incorporate an AI-driven virtual assistant and a supercomputer incorporated, allowing seamless operation and simplicity. The car will also have a Supercreen package, with three connected screens, providing an out-of-this-world atmosphere within the cabin.
The CLA will also be Level-2 semi-autonomous driving capable, using LiDAR sensors and other cutting-edge features. The car will also have over-the-air software updates, so it will always be up to date with the latest advancements. The big glass roof will also be an option, adding to the overall comfort and spaciousness of the car.
The new CLA will have a number of powertrain options, both electric and internal combustion.
Electric Version: The CLA will be built as an electric-first vehicle. Lower-spec electric models will have a rear electric motor and a two-speed transmission for better efficiency. Higher-spec 4Matic versions will have an additional electric motor on the front axle for better traction. The power system of the CLA will be at 800V architecture, which will have high-speed charging with a capacity of up to 320kW. The car will gain another range of around 300 km in just 10 minutes of charging time. Mercedes-Benz is proud to announce the CLA has a range of around 750 km when fully charged.
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Variant: The CLA will also expected to come with a brand-new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. The engine will be seen in three variants of power outputs: 134 bhp, 161 bhp, and 188 bhp. The ICE engines will be offered in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the 4Matic system offered for further power distribution. The power will be sent using an all-new 8-speed DCT gearbox, with an electric motor onboard that produces temporary power of up to 27 bhp as needed.
Mercedes-Benz is pushing the boundaries even more with the new CLA, boasting features that enhance performance as well as comfort. The CLA will be among the earliest models to come with the MB.OS system, therefore making it one of the most technologically innovative cars in the compact luxury market. The system will also incorporate Level-2++ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), pending local legislation.
For performance, the CLA will offer electric models with rear-wheel drive as standard, with a peak 268 bhp to be produced from the rear motor. The all-wheel-drive models will have an additional 107 bhp motor on the front axle, to kick in when additional power or grip is needed.
